NIDCR to Present at the 38th AADR Annual Meeting
New for the 38th AADR Annual Meeting will be a National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) presentation on “why not explore funding opportunities through trans-NIH initiatives?” Targeted to mid-career and senior investigators, the presentation will assist investigators from the dental and craniofacial research community to access the trans-NIH funding mechanisms, i.e., Roadmap, Pioneer, EUREKA and multi-institute RFAs.

Funding for NIH Survives Conference Committee Negotiations

Late yesterday, the House and the Senate Conference Committee agreed to include funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) within the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (H.R. 1), also known as the economic stimulus package. The negotiated final version of the bill must now be approved by both the House and the Senate, which is expected to occur either today or tomorrow, in order to be presented to President Obama for his signature.

Obama Signs SCHIP into Law

The expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) was signed into law on February 4, 2009 by President Barack Obama after a bipartisan approval in the House.

Healthy People 2010 Target Slipping out of Reach with Rise in Children's Dental Caries Rates, Says CDC

The proportion of young children who have ever had dental caries in their primary teeth increased from 18 percent during 1988-1994 to 24 percent during 1999-2004, moving away from the Healthy People 2010 target of 11 percent.

NIDCR Strategic Plan 2009-2013

The NIDCR has completed drafting its Strategic Plan for 2009-2013 and is requesting feedback on it. Please visit the NIDCR’s Web site to read the Strategic Plan and visit the comments Web page to leave your feedback.

AADR Strides in Science is a feature highlighting an AADR member’s accomplishments and comments on how his/her involvement with the AADR has been an important part of his/her career in research. Scott L. Tomar, D.M.D., M.P.H., Dr.PH., is professor and chair of the Department of Community Dentistry and Behavioral Science at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. Among his major research interests are the epidemiology and health effects of tobacco use; understanding and eliminating disparities in oral cancer prevention, detection, treatment, and outcomes; oral health surveillance; and facilitating access to prevention and treatment services for vulnerable populations.

Trainee Positions Available for University of Pittsburgh’s Dental Informatics Program

The University of Pittsburgh Department of Biomedical Informatics is looking to fill trainee positions for its dental informatics post-graduate program.

Cyril O. Enwonwu, professor at the University of Maryland Dental School, has been named an Ambassador in Research!America’s Paul G. Rogers Society for Global Health Research.

Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry have discovered a novel function of the peptide known as Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in the development of the trigeminal nerve.

Judith A. Jones Receives the ADEA William J. Gies Award for Innovation

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Gies Foundation will honor Judith A. Jones for her outstanding innovation in support of global oral health and oral health education at the Gies Awards celebration to be held on March 14, 2009, in Phoenix, Arizona, in conjunction with the 86th ADEA Annual Session. Jones is a professor at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine, and chair of the Department of General Dentistry. 

American Society for Microbiology Recognizes Millicent Goldschmidt

Last month, the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) presented Millicent Goldschmidt with the Roche Diagnostics Alice C. Evans Award. Goldschmidt is a professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

AAAS Nominates Rena D’Souza to Serve on its Annual Meeting Scientific Program Committee

Rena D’Souza has accepted the nomination to serve on the Annual Meeting Scientific Program Committee of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
