Learn Cutting-edge Techniques and Technology at AADR’s Fall Focused Symposium
Poster presentations are being accepted, and the online submission form is available now for AADR’s 2nd Annual Fall Focused Symposium, “Tissue Engineering of Craniofacial & Oral Tissues”, taking place November 5-6, 2009, at the University of California, San Francisco. The submission deadline date is September 25, 2009. The deadline to register to attend this specialized program is October 7, 2009. Register today!

AADR and IADR Elections Open
AADR Members and Retired Members are entitled to vote annually for the offices of AADR Vice-president and Representative to the IADR/AADR Publications Committee and for any Constitutional amendments recommended by AADR Council. Every three years, AADR members also vote for the office of Treasurer. Members and Retired Members received an e-mail notice on August 17, and a printed letter was mailed to eligible voters on August 25. Information about the candidates is available on AADR’s Web site.  If you have any questions, please contact membervote@iadr.org. AADR Members and Retired Members are also eligible to vote in the IADR election.

MicroRNA in Human Saliva May Help Diagnose Oral Cancer

Researchers continue to add to the diagnostic alphabet of saliva by identifying the presence of at least 50 microRNAs that could aid in the detection of oral cancer. David T. Wong, D.M.D., D.M.Sc., and colleagues measured microRNA levels in the saliva of 50 individuals with oral squamous cell carcinoma and 50 healthy control individuals. They detected approximately 50 microRNAs.

To encourage more dental, medical, and veterinary medical students to pursue academic and research careers, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) offers two outstanding research training programs. The HHMI Competition System is now open for access to the online 2010 application.

Deadline Approaching for NIH AREA Awards – September 24, 2009

For dental schools that traditionally receive less than $6 million per year from NIH, please note that there is a new award mechanism, the NIH AREA Award. The AREA award is intended to support small-scale health-related research projects proposed by faculty members. The application deadline is September 24, 2009.

NIH Loan Repayment Programs - Apply Now for 2010 Contracts

The NIH repays outstanding student loans through its extramural Loan Repayment Programs(LRPs). The LRPs target researchers who are or will be conducting nonprofit biomedical or behavioral research, and the application cycle is open.

2010 NIH Director's Pioneer and New Innovator Award Call for Applications

Each summer, the NIH makes grants to exceptionally creative scientists through the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award and NIH Director’s New Innovator Award programs.

Fourth ADEA International Women's Leadership Conference - Call for Papers

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) is sponsoring its fourth global conference to address women’s leadership, September 5-8, 2010, in Salvador, Brazil. The deadline for poster and oral abstracts submissions is December 22, 2009.

NDA Holds its 96th Annual Convention

The National Dental Association held its 96th Annual Convention, July 24-29, 2009, in Jacksonville, Florida. More than 1,100 people attended this meeting, which was themed “Closing the Gap: Building & Reinforcing our Bridges.” In addition to symposia, this meeting featured poster presentations, panel discussions and an exhibitors’ showcase. AADR Past President Marc Heft, D.M.D., Ph.D., attended this meeting with students from the University of Florida.

International Clinical Research Program Seeks Applicants

The Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program is offering a one-year clinical research training experience to advanced-standing students in US schools of medicine, public health, osteopathy, dentistry, nursing, veterinary medicine, optometry, nutrition and pharmacy.

The Dental Materials and Biomaterials Program at NIDCR has announced two RFA’s on Increasing the Service life of Dental Resin Composites. This research is intended to be multidisciplinary.

CDC Announces New Director for the Division of Oral Health

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has announced William (Bill) Kohn, D.D.S., as the Director for the Division of Oral Health (DOH) for the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP).

AADR Member Harold C. Slavkin to Receive American Dental Association’s 2009 Gold Medal Award

Noted educator and researcher Harold C. Slavkin, D.D.S. is the 2009 recipient of the American Dental Association’s ( ADA) Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Dental Research. Slavkin will receive $25,000 and a gold medallion at a formal presentation on Oct. 2, during the ADA’s 150th Annual Session in Honolulu, Hawaii
