NIH SMRB Votes to Create New Translational Center

On Tuesday, December 7, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Scientific Management Review Board (SMRB) adopted a motion that NIH create a new therapeutics and translational Center. The motion came on the heels of a report submitted to NIH Director Francis Collins by the Translational Medicine and Therapeutics Working Group (TMAT) of the SMRB.

Cutting-Edge Salivary Diagnostics Research Presented at AADR 3rd Fall Focused Symposium

AADR held its 3rd Fall Focused Symposium on November 12-13, in the Washington, DC, area. This year, the theme was the fast-moving field of Salivary Diagnostics, with a focus on Scientific & Clinical Frontiers. The symposium was sold-out, but AADR also offered a live Webinar broadcast of the oral sessions.

Register to Attend the 2011 IADR/AADR/CADR Meeting


There still time to preregister is to attend the 89th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, 40th Annual Meeting of the AADR and 35th Annual Meeting of the CADR. This scientific meeting will take place March 16-19, 2011, in San Diego, California, USA. Abstracts notifications are scheduled to be e-mailed on Friday, December 10, to all abstract presenters. IADR does not send notifications to co-authors.

Congress Passes CR to Temporally Fund Government

On December 2, the Senate cleared a temporary continuing resolution (CR). The stop-gap spending measure, which was passed by the House on December 1, keeps the federal government operating until December 18th at Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 levels. This extension provides legislators more time to try to finalize a FY 2011 funding plan.

NIH to Offer New Clinical Research Opportunity

Initiative to partner with Lasker Foundation

The National Institutes of Health has launched a new program in conjunction with the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation that will provide clinicians with funding for patient-focused, clinical research projects.  Candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD, DO, DDS, DMD, or equivalent clinical doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution and must have a professional license to practice in the United States. The goal is to bridge the widening gap between cutting-edge research and improved patient care.

AADR Member Receives Presidential Early Career Award

AADR member Jessica Y. Lee, an associate professor in the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry’s Department of Pediatric Dentistry, has been selected to receive a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE).

Call for Applications: AADR Student Research Fellowship

AADR Student Research Fellowship - $3,000

The deadline for this Fellowship is January 14, 2011. The online submission site is now open and can be found on the award web page at the link above.  These Fellowships have been created to encourage dental students living in the United States to consider careers in oral health research.  Proposals are sought in basic and clinical research related to oral health.

National Academies Call for Research Associates

The National Research Council of the National Academies is pleased to announce the Graduate, Postdoctoral and Senior Research Associateship Programs for 2011. Prospective applicants must initiate dialogue with Advisers at the lab(s) before their application deadline.

Women in Science and Engineering Business Idea Competition

Kauffman Labs for Enterprise Creation is looking for women scientists and engineers in the United States who have ideas that could change the world. Kauffman Labs has launched the Women in Science and Engineering Business Idea Competition to tap a growing pool of these highly educated women who have the potential to start scalable science- and engineering-related ventures.

Effective Health Care Program: Comparative Effectiveness and Safety of Radiotherapy Treatments for Head and Neck Cancer

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Effective Health Care (EHC) Program has announced the release of two different head and neck cancer screening techniques. In addition, a CME activity and a slide talk are also now available.

Report of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform

On Wednesday, December 1, the President’s bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform released its final report, with few changes from the proposed draft released November 10. The National Journal reports that “The Moment of Truth” has the support of 10 of the 18 commissioners, with conversations ongoing to gain the support of 4 additional members needed for ratification of the Commission’s plan.

Notice of Informational Web Seminar for RFA-DE-12-001 - NIDCR Behavioral or Social Intervention Planning and Pilot Data Grant (R34)

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research will hold a pre-application Webinar on Friday December 10, 2010 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. EST to provide technical assistance information and an opportunity for NIDCR staff to explain the goals and objectives of RFA-DE-12-001. This interactive Webinar will provide a forum to ask questions. Topics include program interests, budget preparation and peer review.

AADR Buffalo Section Holds Semi-Annual Research Meeting

The Buffalo section of AADR held its semi-annual research meeting on Friday, November 19, 2010. The purpose of the meeting was to promote research collaborations. The meeting was open to the entire School of Dental Medicine (SDM), University at Buffalo (UB).

AADR Member Judith Jones Receives AHRQ Effective Health Care Grant

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has awarded AADR member Judith Jones an Effective Health Care Grant for her abstract titled “Fluoride Effectiveness in Prevention of Dental Caries in High Caries Risk Adults.”

Baylor College of Dentistry Professor Named Regents Professor

AADR member Robert J. Hinton, professor and director of under graduate teaching and faculty mentoring in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry, is a recipient of prestigious Texas A&M University System Regents Professor Award.
