IADR/AADR Publish Proceedings from the Global Oral Health Inequalities: The Research Agenda

Proceedings published in May issue of IADR/AADR Advances

The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have published the proceedings from the Global Oral Health Inequalities: The Research Agenda, held in July 13, 2010, in Barcelona, Spain. The proceedings are published in the May 2011 issue of the Advances in Dental Research, an E-supplement to the Journal of Dental Research.

IOM Publishes Report: Advancing Oral Health in America; Calls on HHS to Prioritize Oral Health Research

On April 8, 2011, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a report, Advancing Oral Health in America. The report was the result of a 2009 request from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for the IOM to assess the current U.S. oral health care sys­tem and recommend strategic actions for Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) agencies.

Support for Dental School in Japan

The Forsyth Institute has organized a donation effort for Tohoku University School of Dentistry in Sendai, Japan. The dental school is located in the epicenter of the deadly earthquake and tsunami, and the earthquake left school buildings and infrastructure with significant damage. Any AADR member may nominate individuals for AADR Vice-president, AADR Treasurer or AADR Representative to the IADR/AADR Publications Committee. Names of potential candidates must be received by August 5, 2011.

AADR has announced the slate of candidates for vice president (2012-2013) and the AADR representative for the IADR/AADR Joint Publications Committee.
AADR Applauds President Obama’s Support for Maintaining Biomedical Research in FY11
During the April 5 White House Press Briefing, President Barack Obama articulated that his administration is willing to work with leaders in Congress from both political parties in order to avoid a government shutdown later this week.
AADR Partners with ASDA and ADEA to Advance FY12 Oral Health Message through Advocacy Days on Capitol Hill

AADR joined with the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) on March 28th and the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) on April 4th to facilitate Advocacy Days on Capitol Hill. Hundreds of dental students as well as researchers and educators from around the nation traveled to Washington, DC to participate in a program of advocacy training sessions and policy briefings, followed by meetings with Member of Congress and legislative staff.

HHS Announces Plan to Reduce Health Disparities

National Partnership for Action launches strategy to strengthen and expand community-led efforts to achieve health equity

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has announced the launch two strategic plans aimed at reducing health disparities.

The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have published the proceedings from the Sixth World Workshop on Oral Health and Disease in AIDS (WW6), held in Beijing, China, April 21-24, 2009. The proceedings are published in the April 2011 issue of theAdvances in Dental Research, an E-supplement to the Journal of Dental Research.

AADR Gert Quigley Government Affairs Fellowship
April 22 is the deadline to submit applications for the AADR Gert Quigley Government Affairs Fellowship. This public policy fellowship provides a unique learning experience both in Washington, DC, and through grassroots efforts at the Fellow’s local university or institution.
NIH Funding Announcement
Research on Ethical Issues in Biomedical, Social, and Behavioral Research (R03)

This program announcement and two related announcements (R01, PA-11-180; R21, PA-11-181) comprise the fourth set in a series of consecutive FOAs published by NIH since 1999 to encourage research on ethical issues related to the conduct of biomedical, social and behavioral research within the NIH mission.
Call for Proposals under the Program for North American Mobility in Higher Education

The Program for North American Mobility in Higher Education provides funding that aims to improve and increase the quality of human resource development and ways to prepare students for work in the global economy; North American student mobility; institutional partnerships among post-secondary schools in Canada, the United States and Mexico; and a trilateral exchange of knowledge and expertise in higher education and training.

Training Institute on Dissemination and Implementation Research
On August 1-5, 2011, NIH will hold a five-day training session on dissemination and implementation health research. The Training Institute for Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health will feature a faculty of leading experts from a variety of behavioral and social science disciplines.
NIDCR Launches New Homepage

The NIDCR homepage has a new look.  The updated version provides faster access to science news, researcher interviews, funding opportunities, and popular oral health publications.

May 1 Application Deadline for National Academies Mirzayan Policy Fellowship Fast Approaching
The Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program within the Policy and Global Affairs Division of the National Academies is designed to engage its Fellows in the analytical process that informs U.S. science and technology policy. 
Save the Date: 2012 AADR/CADR Annual Meeting

The 41st Annual Meeting & Exhibition of the AADR will take place in Tampa, Florida, USA, March 21-24, 2012. This meeting will be held in conjunction with the 36th Annual Meeting of the CADR.
Upcoming Dental Symposium: Putting Prevention into Practice

The Forsyth Institute will hold a dental symposium themed “Putting Prevention into Practice.” This national leadership symposium will take place May 5-6, 2011, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Rochester Conference on Oral Biology: “Post-Genomics for the Oral Microbiome”

June 16-18, 2011, the University of Rochester Medical Center will have a conference on oral biology themed “Post-Genomics for the Oral Microbiome.” The purpose of the meeting is to bring together oral microbiologists and immunologists with scientists working on multi-organism problems outside of the oral environment.

National Academies Call for Research Associates

The National Research Council of the National Academies is pleased to announce the Graduate, Postdoctoral and Senior Research Associateship Programs for 2011. Prospective applicants must initiate dialogue with Advisers at the lab(s) before their application deadline.

GNYAP 2011 Student Grant Program
The Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics (GNYAP) offers grants to support students enrolled in accredited advanced specialty education programs in prosthodontics. The goal is to provide students with an organized and meaningful research experience, under the guidance of an experienced faculty mentor, to better prepare the student for the rigors of clinical practice and academia.
