Martha Somerman Appointed NIDCR Director

NIH Director Francis S. Collins announced on May 2, 2011, the appointment of AADR member Martha J. Somerman as the new Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), effective August 29, 2011. Somerman served as the President of AADR from 2001-2002.

Contact Your Member of Congress to Restore the CDC Division of Oral Health Today!

Earlier this year, the CDC announced plans to fold its Division of Oral Health into a branch. This step would diminish oral health within the CDC, at a time when HHS is proposing increased focus in the area.

Biomedical Research at Risk in FY12 Appropriations Process

In a few days, Congress will be confronted with the need to raise the nation’s debt ceiling. Many in the House and Senate are calling for spending caps as part of any agreement to raise the debt limit. Spending caps, of the nature being proposed, would force dramatic cuts in virtually every aspect of the federal government.

IADR/AADR Journal of Dental Research Releases Studies on Oral Health Inequalities in Older People

IADR/AADR have published two studies about oral health inequalities in older people and low income individuals. These articles, titled “Income-related Inequalities in Dental Service Utilization by Europeans Aged 50+” by Stefan Listl, and "Income Inequality and Tooth Loss in the United States" by Eduardo Bernabe and Wagner Marcenes, are published in the Journal of Dental Research, the official publication of the IADR/AADR. 

AADR Strides in Science

This month AADR member Jessica Y. Lee was interviewed for the AADR Strides in Science, which is a feature highlighting an AADR member’s accomplishments and comments on how his/her involvement with the AADR has been an important part of his/her career in research. Read more to learn more about Lee’s research and her 2010 receipt of a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from President Barack Obama. 

AADR 2012 Awards and Fellowships

Through numerous sponsorships and donations, AADR is able to fund and administer several awards and fellowships.

ADA is Accepting Nominations for Norton M. Ross Award
The American Dental Association is currently accepting nominations for its 2011 Norton M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research. This award was established to recognize investigators whose clinical research has had a meaningful impact on some aspect of clinical dentistry.
AADR 4th Fall Focused Symposium

AADR’s 4th Fall Focused Symposium: Disparities in Global Oral Health Research, November 3-4, 2011, in Washington, DC.

Save the Date: 2012 IADR/CADR Annual Meeting


The 41st Annual Meeting & Exhibition of the AADR will take place in Tampa, Florida, USA, March 21-24, 2012. This meeting will be held in conjunction with the 36th Annual Meeting of the CADR.

AADR Selects New Gert Quigley Fellow

AADR has announced that Lindsay Rayburn, 2011-12 Councilor of the AADR NSRG and a fourth year dental student at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, will serve as the 2011-12 Gert Quigley Public Policy Fellow.

NIH Funding Announcement

This program announcement and two related announcements (R01, PA-11-180; R21, PA-11-181) comprise the fourth set in a series of consecutive FOAs published by NIH since 1999 to encourage research on ethical issues related to the conduct of biomedical, social and behavioral research within the NIH mission.

Call for Proposals under the Program for North American Mobility in Higher Education

The Program for North American Mobility in Higher Education provides funding that aims to improve and increase the quality of human resource development and ways to prepare students for work in the global economy.

DTAF Grants Application Process Now Open

Every year, the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation awards $100,000 in grants. Past recipients have used this seed money for innovative programs designed to improve the access to, and productivity of, the oral healthcare system by identifying, nurturing and leveraging promising projects.

Rochester Conference on Oral Biology: “Post-Genomics for the Oral Microbiome”

June 16-18, 2011, the University of Rochester Medical Center will have a conference on oral biology themed “Post-Genomics for the Oral Microbiome.” The purpose of the meeting is to bring together oral microbiologists and immunologists with scientists working on multi-organism problems outside of the oral environment.

GNYAP 2011 Student Grant Program

The Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics (GNYAP) offers grants to support students enrolled in accredited advanced specialty education programs in prosthodontics. The goal is to provide students with an organized and meaningful research experience, under the guidance of an experienced faculty mentor, to better prepare the student for the rigors of clinical practice and academia.

National Academies Call for Research Associates

The National Research Council of the National Academies is pleased to announce the Graduate, Postdoctoral and Senior Research Associateship Programs for 2011. Detailed program information, including instructions on how to submit online applications, a list of laboratories and their locations, and areas of research, can be found at www.nationalacademies.org/rap.
