Save the date for the 5th AADR Fall Focused Symposium: Translational Genetics - Advancing Fronts for Craniofacial Health. This meeting will take place November 16 – 17, 2012, at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. The preliminary schedule of events has been posted.

Activate your IADR Member Account
IADR has upgraded its membership database and website. These updates provide additional security and customization for accessing members-only features, networking opportunities and Association publications. You’ll need to activate your account at http://www.iadr.org/activate to enjoy these updates. You will need to enter your member number, first name and last name on the left side of the screen. The activation process will require you to create a unique username and password for your member account. Once you activate your account, use your new username and password to log into the members-only section of the website. Once you’re logged into the members-only section, you will be able to search for other IADR/AADR members, update your member record, renew your membership and register for upcoming meetings.

AADR President Calls on Congress to Increase Funding for Dental Research

On March 29, before the House Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education Appropriations and a packed audience, the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) President Rena D'Souza (Baylor College of Dentistry - Texas A&M Health Science Center, Dallas), recognizing the importance of oral health, asked Congress to increase support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).

NIDCR Establishes National Dental Practice-Based Research Network

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) has awarded a $66.8 million, seven-year grant that consolidates its dental practice-based research network initiative into a unified nationally coordinated effort.

The consolidated initiative, renamed The National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (NDPBRN), is headquartered at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry. It serves as a national administrative hub that leads and oversees six smaller regional research sites, or nodes. The nodes are located in Rochester, NY; Gainesville, Fla.; Birmingham; Minneapolis; San Antonio; and Portland, Ore. The NIDCR is part of the National Institutes of Health.

New Classification Criteria Released for Research on Sjögren's Syndrome

An international team of researchers released new classification criteria for the common autoimmune condition Sjögren's syndrome. Classification criteria are the consensus opinion of a group of experts that researchers use in clinical studies to confirm a previous diagnosis and/or subclassify patients who have the same type of a given condition. The new guidelines appear in the April issue of the journal Arthritis Care & Research.

AADR/CADR Hold Successful Annual Meeting
The 41st Annual Meeting & Exhibition of the American Association for Dental Research, held in conjunction with the 36th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, took place in Tampa, Florida, March 21-24. The meeting drew a total registration of 2,619 attendees.
Oral Health Public Service Advertising Campaign

A major national public awareness advertising campaign about oral health will start this summer. The Dental Trade Alliance Foundation, joined with 36 groups in the dental community including AADR, to form the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives and partnered with The Ad Council to produce this campaign.

AREA Funding Opportunity (Parent R15)
TheAcademic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) grants support small research projects in the biomedical and behavioral sciences conducted by faculty and students in health professional schools, and other academic components that have not been major recipients of NIH research grant funds.
Investigator Training for Financial Conflict of Interest

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has issued a final rule in the Federal Register that amends the Public Health Service (PHS) regulations on Responsibility of Applicants for Promoting Objectivity in Research for which PHS Funding is Sought (42 C.F.R. Part 50, Subpart F) and Responsible Prospective Contractors (45 C.F.R. Part 94).

Dental Reimbursement Program

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HRSA) has announced the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Dental Reimbursements Community Based Dental Partnership grants. This announcement solicits applications for Part F Dental Reimbursement Program (DRP) to expand HIV services and education and training.

Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program

Applications are now being accepted for the fall 2012 session of the Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship program. This graduate fellowship program of the National Academies—consisting of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine and National Research Council—is an early career educational and training opportunity. 

ADA Issues a Call for Nominations
The American Dental Association has issued a call for nominations for its Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Dental Research. The award honors individuals who through basic or clinical research contribute to the advancement of the profession of dentistry or to major improvement in the oral health of the public.
AADR Strides in Science

This feature highlights an AADR member’s research and focuses on how AADR has been an integral part in his/her career. This Fall Focused Symposium was organized by AADR Past President Jeffrey Ebersole and was held in Washington, DC, November 3-4, 2011.

Important IADR General Session Information

The IADR General Session & Exhibition will take place in Iguaçu Falls, Brazil, on June 20-23, 2012. Although the meeting location is spectacular, the physical layout of the convention center and hotels necessitate a change from the traditional IADR meeting format.

Traveling to Brazil for the IADR General Session U.S. Citizens will Require a Visa
If you’re planning to attend the IADR General Session in Iguaçu Falls, Brazil, June 20-23, 2012, and you’re a U.S. citizen a visa will be required for your travel. You must have a passport that will be valid for at least six months from the time of the visa application.
OHRP Conference Building Bridges: Research Around the World

Register now to attend the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) Research Community Forum (RCF) entitled “Building Bridges: Research Around the World,” co-sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh, on June 22, 2012.

After a national search, AADR member Joel Berg has been selected as the next dean of the University of Washington School of Dentistry.





Michael Reddy Named Dean of UAB School of Dentistry
