Federal Budget Plans Could Spark another Recession

Congress continues to work on Fiscal Year 2013 spending bills, although it is clear that few final agreements will be forged until after the November elections. Hanging over the annual appropriations process is the Budget Control Act of 2011 (BCA), which contains $1.2 trillion (FY13-FY21) worth of across-the-board spending reductions that are set to begin in January, unless Congress acts to develop an alternative.

Senator Sanders Introduces Oral Health Bill

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is introducing a comprehensive dental care bill that aims to expand access and improve quality. The legislation has five central components: expanding coverage, creating new access points, enhancing the workforce, improving education and funding additional research.

Salivary Diagnostics Featured in Congressional Briefing

On May 15, the Coalition for Health Funding (CHF) presented a briefing on Capitol Hill, “Public Health 101: The Federal Role in Health Research… What’s in it for Taxpayers?” The briefing featured areas of biomedical research that rely on support from federal research agencies. A presentation on salivary diagnostics was given by AADR Past President David Wong.

NIH selects NIDCR to be part of Centers of Excellence in Pain Education

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Pain Consortium has announced that it has selected 11 health professional schools as designated Centers of Excellence in Pain Education (CoEPEs). The CoEPEs will act as hubs for the development, evaluation, and distribution of pain management curriculum resources for dental, medical, nursing and pharmacy schools to enhance and improve how health care professionals are taught about pain and its treatment. Twenty institutes (including the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research), centers and offices at NIH are involved in the consortium.

OraQuick® In-Home HIV Test Receives Unanimous Positive Recommendation from FDA Advisory Committee
On May 15, OraSure Technologies, Inc. announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Blood Products Advisory Committee (BPAC) provided a unanimous positive recommendation for the company’s OraQuick® In-Home HIV Test. The BPAC provides advice to the FDA on issues related to the safety and effectiveness of biological products and medical devices seeking FDA approval.
NIDCR Funding Opportunities: Imaging Diagnostics of Dental Diseases and Conditions
The NIDCR has announced two funding opportunities titled "Imaging Diagnostics of Dental Diseases and Conditions" (announcement numbers PA-12-193 and PA-12-195). The focus of these funding opportunity announcements is to encourage the development of devices that will improve diagnosis of the following oral diseases and conditions: 1) caries after the appearance of white spot lesions and before penetration through the enamel-dentin junction; 2) severity and status of periodontal disease; 3) cracks in teeth and the depth of their extension into the tooth; and 4) level of pulp vitality.
