AADR Member Margherita Fontana Receives PECASE

On July 31, AADR member Margherita Fontana, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for her studies on the prediction of caries risk for toddlers in underserved communities. The PECASE is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers in the early stages of their independent research careers during a ceremony at the White House.

Ask the Candidates

As the 2012 election season heats up, it’s time to find out where congressional and presidential candidates stand on health research issues. AADR is working with Research!America on an award-winning voter education initiative titled Your CandidatesYour Health 2012.

Congress Tables FY13 Budget Until March
On July 31, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced that he has reached a deal with House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to fund the federal government from the beginning of Fiscal Year 2013 on October 1 through the end of March 2013 at a level 0.4% above the current FY12 level.
AADR at the White House: “Advocacy Works”

On July 27, AADR joined with a couple dozen other organizations for a meeting at the White House with Senior Advisor to the President Valerie Jarrett and Jon Carson who heads the Office of Public Engagement. The meeting was organized by the Coalition for Health Funding (CHF), which consists of roughly 80 organizations including AADR. The session offered an opportunity for the groups to hear about the near-term policy goals and related strategy of the administration, as well as for the groups to discuss their advocacy efforts in support of sustained appropriations for the Health and Human Services (HHS) cluster.

NIH Workshop on Chronic Overlapping Pain Conditions
The NIH’s National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, together with the NIH Pain Consortium, will sponsor a workshop on Chronic Overlapping Pain Conditions. The workshop will be held August 13-14, 2012, in the Natcher Conference Center, Building 45 on the NIH Campus in Bethesda, Maryland.
NIDCR Funding Opportunities: Imaging Diagnostics of Dental Diseases and Conditions

The NIDCR has two funding opportunities titled "Imaging Diagnostics of Dental Diseases and Conditions" (announcement numbers PA-12-193 and PA-12-195).

Funding Opportunities Available through IADR/AADR Awards
IADR and AADR are accepting applications for the 2013 IADR/AADR awards and fellowships. Through numerous sponsorships and donations, the Associations are able to fund and administer several awards and fellowships.

Call for Posters - 2012 Fall Focused Symposium

Submit a poster for presentation consideration at the 5th AADR Fall Focused Symposium: Translational Genetics - Advancing Fronts for Craniofacial Health. This meeting will take place November 16 – 17, 2012, at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

IADR/AADR/CADR General Session – Abstract Submission Site is Open

IADR/AADR/CADR are now accepting abstract submissions for presentation consideration at the 2013 IADR/AADR/CADR General Session. This meeting will take place March 20-23, 2013, in Seattle, Washington, USA. October 5, 2012 is the abstract submission deadline.
First Symposium on Translational Orthodontic Research
The Consortium for Translational Orthodontic Research at New York University College of Dentistry is hosting a Symposium October 5, 2012. This symposium will provide an opportunity for orthodontists and researchers in the field to meet, exchange ideas, and discuss potential collaborations and partnerships.
2012 Summit on the Science of Eliminating Health Disparities

Save the date for the 2012 Summit on the Science of Eliminating Health Disparities, themed "Building a Healthier Society: Integrating Science, Policy and Practice, taking place on October 31-November 3, 2012, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

3rd Annual UCSF School of Dentistry Global Oral Health Symposium

Save the date for the 3rd Annual University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry Global Oral Health Symposium, May 13-14, 2013. The program has been expanded to include a ½ day workshop on May 14.  Details on the theme and agenda will be available in the coming months, as well as registration instructions.

In Memoriam

It is with deep sadness to announce that AADR member Kamal Asgar passed away July 8, 2012 at his home in New Jersey. Dr. Asgar worked in dental materials at the University of Michigan’s School of Dentistry for almost 30 years and retired in 1988.  He influenced the careers of a huge number of dental students, graduate students, young faculty members and colleagues. He is well known for his passion and special enthusiasm for understanding dental materials.  In addition to his teaching, he was a lifelong contributor to the AADR and IADR meetings and attended for 54 consecutive years.
