Deadline Approaching – 2012 AADR Fall Focused Symposium Call for Posters
Submit a poster for presentation consideration at the 5th AADR Fall Focused Symposium: Translational Genetics - Advancing Fronts for Craniofacial Health. This meeting will take place November 16 – 17, 2012, at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. September 28 is the poster submission deadline. 
 
Registration is now open for this event and the preliminary schedule of events has been posted. Visit www.aadronline.org/ffs2012 for more information about submitting your poster and register to attend the 5th AADR Fall Focused Symposium. 
 
AADR and IADR Elections Now Open
AADR Members and Retired Members are entitled to vote annually for the office of IADR Vice-president, AADR Vice-president, AADR Publications Committee Member-at-Large and any Constitutional amendments recommended by IADR or AADR Council. Members and Retired Members received an email notice in August with a secure voting code to vote in each election. If you have any questions, please contact membervote@iadr.org. November 7, 2012, is the voting deadline.

IADR/AADR/CADR General Session – Abstract Submission Deadline is Oct. 5, 2012

The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) is now accepting abstracts for presentation consideration for the 91st IADR General Session & Exhibition, March 20-23, 2013, in Seattle, Washington, USA. This meeting will be held in conjunction with the 42nd Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research and 37th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, and it is expected to attract more than 5,000 participants.

Can You Serve on a Committee?
Each year IADR and AADR seek a wide variety of volunteers, representing as many geographic areas and scientific disciplines as possible, to fill committee vacancies.
IADR/AADR Published Study Estimates High Prevalence of Periodontitis in U.S. Adults
In a study titled “Prevalence of Periodontitis in Adults in the United States: 2009 and 2010,” lead author Paul Eke, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, estimates the prevalence, severity and extent of periodontitis in the adult U.S population using data from the 2009 and 2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycle. The study is published in the Journal of Dental Research, the official publication of the International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR).  
Normal Physical Development in Children Treated with Composites or Amalgam
The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have published a study titled “Dental Composite and Amalgam and Physical Development in Children,” by lead author Nancy Maserejian, New England Research Institutes. This study is published in the Journal of Dental Research, which the official publication of the IADR/AADR. 
Loss of Heterozygosity (LOH) Profiles—Validated Risk Predictors for Progression to Oral Cancer
The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has published a study titled “Loss of Heterozygosity (LOH) Profiles—Validated Risk Predictors for Progression to Oral Cancer.” IADR member Mirian Rosin was the lead researcher of this study, which was published in AACR’s journal Cancer Research Prevention.

Ask the Candidates
As the 2012 election season heats up, it’s time to find out where congressional and presidential candidates stand on health research issues. AADR is working with Research!America on an award-winning voter education initiative titled Your Candidates–Your Health 2012. 
Nationwide Oral Health Campaign Launched
Last month AADR announced that it has joined with more than 30 oral health organizations in the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives. Together with the Ad Council, the Partnership unveiled the new Kids' Healthy Mouths campaign, which is a groundbreaking multimedia effort that aims to educate parents and caregivers about the importance of a healthy mouth and motivate them to modify their children's behaviors through simple, low-cost, preventive strategies.
Fogarty Seeks Input on its Strategic Plan
The U.S. National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center is updating its strategic plan. Accordingly, it seeks input from scientists, the general public, and interested parties. Fogarty is further seeking to identify current and future needs and directions for global health research and research training. 
First Identification of a Strong Oral Carcinogen in Smokeless Tobacco
On August 22, scientists reported identification of the first substance in smokeless tobacco that is a strong oral carcinogen, a health risk for the 9 million users of chewing tobacco, snuff and related products in the U.S., and called upon the federal government to regulate or ban the substance.
NIH Loan Repayment Programs
The 2013 application cycle for the National Institutes of Health’s Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs) is now open. The LRPs repay the outstanding student loans of researchers who are or will be conducting nonprofit biomedical or behavioral research. 
NIDCR Funding Opportunity: Design and Development of Novel Dental Composite Restorative Systems (U01)
The NIDCR have issued a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) titled "Design and Development of Novel Dental Composite Restorative Systems (U01)." The focus of this FOA is to support the design and development of novel dental composite restorative systems that demonstrate superiority in material properties and endurance in the oral environment over the currently used bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA)-based systems.  
NIDCR Funding Opportunities: Imaging Diagnostics of Dental Diseases and Conditions
The NIDCR has two funding opportunities titled "Imaging Diagnostics of Dental Diseases and Conditions" (announcement numbers PA-12-193 and PA-12-195). 
National Advisory Dental & Craniofacial Research Council Meeting, September 21, 2012
The 201st meeting of the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council (NADCRC) will be held Friday, September 21, 2012. This meeting will take place at the National Institutes of Health main campus in Building 31C, 6th Floor, Conference Room 10, Bethesda, Maryland.

Funding Opportunities Available through IADR/AADR Awards
ADR and AADR are accepting applications for the 2013 IADR/AADR awards and fellowships. Through numerous sponsorships and donations, the Associations are able to fund and administer several awards and fellowships.

The Consortium for Translational Orthodontic Research at New York University College of Dentistry is hosting a Symposium October 5, 2012. 
2012 Summit on the Science of Eliminating Health Disparities
Save the date for the 2012 Summit on the Science of Eliminating Health Disparities, themed "Building a Healthier Society: Integrating Science, Policy and Practice, taking place on October 31-November 3, 2012, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. 
3rd Annual UCSF School of Dentistry Global Oral Health Symposium
Save the date for the 3rd Annual University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry Global Oral Health Symposium, May 13-14, 2013. The program has been expanded to include a ½ day workshop on May 14.
