As we at AADR continue to follow the devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy, our wishes of safekeeping are with AADR members and their families, dental schools, institutions and industry in the path or periphery of the superstorm.

Elections Conclude, Budget Battle Begins Anew

The campaign speeches, debates and rallies are over. However, the November 6 election did little to settle the debate on how best to reduce the deficit while bolstering the U.S. economy. A majority of voters opted to give President Barack Obama additional time to right the economy.

5th AADR Fall Focused Symposium on Translational Genetics – One Week Away

Registration is open and hotel reservations are available for the 91st IADR General Session & Exhibition, March 20-23, 2013, in Seattle, Washington, USA. This meeting will be held in conjunction with the 42nd Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research and the 37th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research. It is expected to attract nearly 5,000 participants.
Call for Papers in Special Issue in JDR on Clinical Research!

Due to the incredibly enthusiastic response to the 2012 Journal of Dental Research clinical supplement, the JDR is excited to announce the publication of another supplement in 2013 encompassing all areas of clinical research in the dental, oral and craniofacial sciences. This peer-reviewed supplement will bring emerging contributions in translational science to clinical application for the oral healthcare community.

First Gene Therapy Study in Human Salivary Gland Shows Promise
According to scientists from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), gene therapy can be performed safely in the human salivary gland. This finding comes from the first-ever safety, or Phase I, clinical study of gene therapy in a human salivary gland. AADR member Bruce Baum is the lead researcher of this study.
NIH Loan Repayment Programs
The 2013 application cycle for the National Institutes of Health’s Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs) is now open. The LRPs repay the outstanding student loans of researchers who are or will be conducting nonprofit biomedical or behavioral research. Opportunities are available in five research areas: clinical, pediatric, health disparities, contraception and infertility, and clinical research for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Applications will be accepted until November 15, 2012, 8 p.m. ET.
Funding Opportunities: Epigenomics of Virus-Associated Oral Diseases (R01 and R21)

The NIH NIDCR has issued two Funding Opportunity Announcements. Letters of intent are due by January 21, 2013.

USC Ostrow School of Dentistry Introduces Online Master of Science in Geriatric Dentistry

The University of Southern California Ostrow School of Dentistry is accepting applications for its new online master of science in geriatric dentistry. This three-year, 30.5-unit online program is designed for practicing dentists who wish to greatly improve their skills in addressing the unique dental needs of older adult patients within the context of their medical and physical conditions.

Save the Date: April 19, 2013, AADR Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill

The 2013 AADR Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill will take place April 17, 2013, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The program will begin in the Rayburn House Office Building Gold Room (#2168). Federal investments in biomedical research continue to be targeted for reduction despite the well demonstrated contribution to U.S. economic growth and individual health. During FY11, NIH funded just 18% of proposal received—an all-time low.

'Destination Europe' events showcase the vibrant and exciting research and innovation culture in Europe and the opportunities available to researchers, from anywhere in the world, interested in working in Europe.

Rescheduled: The 2012 Science of Eliminating Health Disparities Summit
The 2012 Science of Eliminating Health Disparities Summit has been rescheduled for December 17-19, 2012. The Summit will officially open on Monday, December 17 at 8 a.m. Workshops and pre-summit sessions previously scheduled for Wednesday, October 31 will take place on Wednesday, December 19.
NIH David E. Barnes Lecture – January 20, 2013
Fogarty International Center and the NIDCR present the 2012 David E. Barmes Global Health Lecture titled “Global Health: from John Snow to Genome Science,”  by Sir Mark Walport, director of the Wellcome Trust. The lecture will take place Wednesday, January 30, 2013, from 11 a.m. to noon at the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland.
IADR/AADR Satellite Symposium: Updates in Clinical Research Methodology

Taking place March 18, 2013, at the Seattle Convention Center, this symposium is targeted to individuals who are alumni of the Summer Institute in Clinical Dental Research Methods, or who have had other exposures to basic principles of clinical research.  Topics discussed are more advanced and/or specialized than those typically included in discussions of basic concepts of clinical research methods.

3rd Annual UCSF School of Dentistry Global Oral Health Symposium

Save the date for the 3rd Annual University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry Global Oral Health Symposium, May 13-14, 2013. The program has been expanded to include a ½ day workshop on May 14.  Details on the theme and agenda will be available in the coming months, as well as registration instructions.

Symposium to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the University at Buffalo Oral Biology Graduate Program
A special symposium on oral microbiome, immunity and chronic disease will be held June 12-14, 2013 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Graduate Program in Oral Biology at the University at Buffalo. The symposium will take place in Buffalo, New York at the Hotel at the Lafayette, a recently restored architectural gem in downtown Buffalo.
DENTSPLY Awards the 2012 Student Clinicians of the American Dental Association

DENTSPLY International assembled the 53rd Annual ADA/DENTSPLY Student Clinician Research Award Program and Reception on October 20, 2012. The awards program took place in San Francisco, California, during the 2012 ADA Annual Session. Approximately 70 student clinicians participated in this year’s program representing research conducted across 36 countries.

AADR President Rena D’Souza is Elected into the German National Academy of Sciences
AADR President Rena D’Souza has been elected a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. A special ceremony will be held in in the summer of 2013, where D’Souza will be presented with a certificate acknowledging her induction into the academy.
AADR Vice President Timothy DeRouen Receives Honorary Doctorate from Thammasat University


The Crown Prince of Thailand presents Timothy DeRouen with an honorary doctorate in oral health science. The degree was conferred by the Crown Prince of Thailand at the Thammasat University commencement.

On August 30, 2012, AADR Vice President Timothy DeRouen was awarded an honorary doctorate in oral health science from Thammasat University, Bangkok, Thailand.  DeRouen has served as associate dean at the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine, as well as associate dean for research and academics at the School of Dentistry. Since 2011, he has been the interim dean of the School of Dentistry.

AADR Past President Barbara Boyan to become the Dean of the VCU College of Engineering
Virginia Commonwealth University has announced that AADR Past President Barbara Boyan will become dean of its school of engineering.
