Recap of the 5th AADR Fall Focused Symposium on Translational Genetics

AADR held its 5th AADR Fall Focused Symposium, November 16 – 17, 2012, at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. This year’s meeting themed “Translational Genetics - Advancing Fronts for Craniofacial Health” was attended by 71 scientists and researchers.

Call for Papers in Special Issue in JDR on Clinical Research!

Due to the incredibly enthusiastic response to the 2012 Journal of Dental Research clinical supplement, the JDR is excited to announce the publication of another supplement in 2013 encompassing all areas of clinical research in the dental, oral and craniofacial sciences. This peer-reviewed supplement will bring emerging contributions in translational science to clinical application for the oral healthcare community.

Article on Toothbrush Standards in ISO Publication

IADR Member Derek Jones published an article on Toothbrush Standards in the November/December issue of ISOFocus+. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is the world’s largest developer of voluntary International Standards.

Save the Date: April 19, 2013, AADR Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill

The 2013 AADR Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill will take place April 17, 2013, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The program will begin in the Rayburn House Office Building Gold Room (#2168). Federal investments in biomedical research continue to be targeted for reduction despite the well demonstrated contribution to U.S. economic growth and individual health. During FY11, NIH funded just 18% of proposal received—an all-time low. Despite this fact, $2.5 billion is scheduled to be removed from the NIH budget this fiscal year.

Budget Message is Getting Across
AADR partner, the Coalition for Health Funding (CHF), reports that senior staff on Capitol Hill and in the Obama administration have communicated an intent to protect the non-defense discretionary (NDD) budget as much as possible during the ongoing negotiations of an alternative to the across-the-board budget cuts set to take place on January 2, 2013. The NDD budget includes much of the Department of Health and Human Services, including NIH/NIDCR.
Draft Guidance for IRBs, Clinical Investigators and Sponsors

The Food and Drug Administration is announcing the availability of a draft guidance entitled “Guidance for IRBs, Clinical Investigators, and Sponsors: IRB Responsibilities for Reviewing the Qualifications of Investigators, Adequacy of Research Sites, and the Determination of Whether an IND/IDE Is Needed.”

AADR recently changed the eligibility rules for application to the AADR Student Research Fellowship Program.

The NIDCR has two funding opportunities titled "Imaging Diagnostics of Dental Diseases and Conditions" (announcement numbers PA-12-193 and PA-12-195).

HHMI Research Opportunities for Dental Students at U.S. Schools
In order to encourage more medical, dental, and veterinary students to pursue academic and research careers, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) offers outstanding “year-out” and summer research training programs for students enrolled in schools in the U.S. HHMI and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research are interested in increasing the number of dental students applying for these programs. Women and under-represented minorities are particularly encouraged to apply. Students enrolled in D.M.D./Ph.D. programs are not eligible to apply.  
Strides in Science Perspectives from an HHMI Medical Research Fellow

This month’s Strides in Science features Harrison Mackler, D.M.D., who was part of the 2009-2010 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Medical Research Fellows Program (HHMI MRFP). In that cycle, he was one of 70 students in the US and the only dental student to receive this honor.

Four AADR Members Elected in 2013 Class of AAAS Fellows

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) released the names of the 701 newly elected 2013 AAAS Fellows.

The 2012 Science of Eliminating Health Disparities Summit has been rescheduled for December 17-19, 2012. The Summit, still scheduled taking place in National Harbor, Maryland, will officially open on Monday, December 17 at 8 a.m.

Fogarty International Center and the NIDCR present the 2012 David E. Barmes Global Health Lecture titled “Global Health: from John Snow to Genome Science,”  by Sir Mark Walport, director of the Wellcome Trust.

The University of Michigan School of Dentistry will hold its research day program on Wednesday, February 20, 2013. Monday, January 18, 2013, is the deadline to submit abstracts for presentation consideration.

Taking place March 18, 2013, at the Seattle Convention Center, this symposium is targeted to individuals who have had exposure to basic principles of clinical research.

Call for Abstracts for Epi-Forum at AADR/IADR

The 2013 Oral Epi-Forum organizers are currently soliciting proposals for presentations covering a broad range of topics related to oral epidemiology and biostatistics. The 2013 Epi-Forum will precede the AADR/IADR 2013 Annual Meeting to be held in Seattle, Washington. The 2013 Epi-Forum will take place on Tuesday, March 19 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. As the Epi-Forum is immediately prior to the AADR/IADR meeting, registration and participation in the IADR/AADR is strongly encouraged.

Developing Programs of Research in the Behavioral and Social Sciences at the NIDCR

The NIDCR meeting themed “Developing Programs of Research in the Behavioral and Social Sciences at the NIDCR” will take place Thursday, March 21, 2013, at the IADR/AADR/CADR General Session, at the Washington State Convention Center. This meeting will take place in the morning from 8 to 10:30. Attendance is limited to 20 participants.

NDPBRN Training at the IADR General Session
The National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (NDPBRN) invites you to ensure you have the training you need to participate in a clinical study. On Saturday, March 22, 2013, at the IADR General Session in Seattle, the NDPBRN will host a meeting from 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. coordinated by the Western Region with support from Kaiser Permanente.
Save the Date: Pulp Regeneration Translational Opportunities
Save the date for the next IADR Pulp Biology & Regeneration Scientific Group symposium entitled “Pulp Regeneration – Translational Opportunities.” This meeting will take place in San Francisco, California, March 24-26, 2013, at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, right after the IADR/AADR/CADR General Session.
3rd Annual UCSF School of Dentistry Global Oral Health Symposium

Save the date for the 3rd Annual University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry Global Oral Health Symposium, May 13-14, 2013. The program has been expanded to include a ½ day workshop on May 14. 

Symposium to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the University at Buffalo Oral Biology Graduate Program
A special symposium on oral microbiome, immunity and chronic disease will be held June 12-14, 2013 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Graduate Program in Oral Biology at the University at Buffalo. The symposium will take place in Buffalo, New York at the Hotel at the Lafayette, a recently restored architectural gem in downtown Buffalo.
