Deadline Extended to Submit Your Paper for JDR Supplement on Clinical Research in Oral Implantology

The deadline has been extended to tomorrow, Friday, June 14, 2013, to submit your manuscript for publication consideration in a special JDR supplement on clinical research in oral implantology. 

JDR Study Featured in The New York Times

The JDR published article titled “Patient Stratification for Preventive Care in Dentistry,” by lead author and JDR Editor William Giannobile, was featured in the June 11 edition of The New York Times.

Systematic Analysis: High Global Burden of Oral Conditions – 3.9 Billion Affected
On May 29, IADR/AADR published a paper titled “Global Burden of Oral Conditions in 1990-2010: A Systemic Analysis.” The paper, written by lead author Wagner Marcenes, Queen Mary University, London, is published in the IADR/AADRJournal of Dental Research.

Committees are the backbone of the IADR and AADR, and each year the Associations seek a wide variety of volunteers, representing as many geographic areas and scientific disciplines as possible, to fill committee vacancies. 
Want to See Your Research Photos in IADR/AADR Communications?

IADR and AADR are encouraging members to submit photos of researchers working in their labs, clinics or in the field for consideration in upcoming IADR/AADR marketing and communications pieces. We are searching for photos that visually demonstrate the full breadth of the IADR/AADR members' research. Please only submit photos for which you have the copyright and that the Associations have permission to use.

House Plan Transfers Billions from Non-Security Sector

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers is advancing a plan that increases security expenditures while maintaining the $967 billion cap on discretionary spending set by the Budget Control Act of 2011 (BCA). 

NIH Releases Fact Sheet Outlining Impacts of Sequestration

On June 3, the NIH released a fact sheet outlining the impact of the sequestration on its operations and plans for FY2013. The sequester, initiated on March 1, 2013, requires that the NIH slash its FY2013 budget by either 5% or $1.55 billion. These budgetary changes will be applied across all 27 Institutes and Centers of the NIH, significantly affecting every aspect of medical research, including that of the NIDCR.

This fall may be the last real opportunity that advocates and ultimately lawmakers have to replace the budget sequester with a balanced alternative. After Labor Day, Congress will return to D.C. faced with both the impending start of a new fiscal year and the need for the debt limit to be increased.
Coalition of Stakeholder Groups Launch Video on Budget Cuts

The budget debacle in Washington known as sequestration remains a mystery to much of the public. A coalition of advocates representing communities impacted by sequestration continues to work on public and legislative messaging, as well as to capture the real impacts of the policy.

NIH Scientists Discover Molecule Triggers Sensation of Itch

Scientists at the National Institutes of Health report they have discovered in mouse studies that a small molecule released in the spinal cord triggers a process that is later experienced in the brain as the sensation of itch. 

Request for Applications: FaceBase 2

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research has issued two requests for applications for FaceBase 2. The NIDCR-funded FaceBase Consortium (www.facebase.org) was established in 2009 to advance craniofacial research by creating comprehensive datasets on craniofacial development and dysmorphologies and disseminating them to the wider craniofacial research community.

The Role of the NIH in Nurturing Clinician-Scientists
In a perspective published in the June 13, 2013, New England Journal of Medicine, Michael Gottesman of the NIH National Cancer Institute discusses the role of NIH in nurturing clinician-scientists. In addition to the need for physician-scientists, Gottesman was very inclusive of the need for dentist-scientists.
NIH–Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program – Application Deadline June 24, 2013
The NIH is seeking applicants for the NIH Lasker Clinical Research Scholars program for the purpose of supporting the research activities during the early stage careers of independent clinical researchers. June 24, 2013, is the application deadline.
Call for Applications: 2013 Fall OSTP Student Volunteer Program
The Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is currently accepting applications for its Fall 2013 Student Volunteer Program. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. EDT, Friday, June 28. 
IADR/AADR Awards & Fellowships

IADR and AADR are now accepting applications for the 2014 awards and fellowships. Through numerous sponsorships and donations, the Associations are able to administer several awards and fellowships each year.

Call for Nominations: ADA Norton M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research

Tomorrow, June 14, is the deadline to submit a nomination for the American Dental Association (ADA) 2014 Norton M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research. 

Dental e-Measures Testing: Call for Proposals

The Dental Quality Alliance (DQA) is soliciting proposals to test the feasibility, reliability and validity of two e-measures. Details on this request are available in the request for proposals.

Strides in Science

Sally J. Marshall, Ph.D., is currently the vice provost of Academic Affairs at the University of California, San Francisco. She is also a distinguished professor of biomaterials and bioengineering, preventive and restorative dental sciences. She will retire from UCSF effective July 1, 2013 and will return part-time for research.

AADR Immediate Past President Rena D’Souza Selected as Dean at University of Utah School of Dentistry

AADR Immediate Past President Rena D’Souza has been selected to serve as the first dean of the University of Utah’s new school of dentistry. She will assume her new role on August 1, 2013. Currently, D’Souza is professor with tenure at the Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry, department of biomedical sciences. 

JDR Editor William Giannobile Honored with 2013 Alan J. Davis/SCADA Achievement Award

On June 6, DENTSPY International announced that JDR Editor William Giannobile is the 2013 recipient of the Alan J. Davis/ Student Clinicians-American Dental Association (SCADA) Achievement Award. 

6th AADR Fall Focused Symposium

The 6th AADR Fall Focused Symposium, themed “Individualized Oral Health Care: Concept Design to Clinical Practice,” will be held at the University of Michigan North Campus in the East Room of Pierpont Commons, October 24 – 25, 2013.
