Deadline Approaching to Submit Your Poster for the 6th AADR Fall Focused Symposium
Friday, August 23, 2013, 11:59 p.m. PDT is the deadline to submit your poster abstract for presentation consideration at the 6th AADR Fall Focused Symposium: Personalized Oral Health Care: Concept Design to Clinical Practice. Personalized medicine promises to revolutionize healthcare with better diagnoses, earlier interventions, targeted drug therapies and more efficient drug development. What does all of this mean for oral health care? Find out at the 6th AADR Fall Focused Symposium.

Taking place October 24 – 25, 2013, the University of Michigan North Campus in the East Room of Pierpont Commons will serve as the venue for this meeting. NIDCR Seeks Your Input on Next Strategic Plan

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research is continuing on in the process of developing its next strategic plan, which will cover 2014-19.

National Advisory Dental & Craniofacial Research Council Meeting, September 9, 2013

The 204th session of the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council (NADCRC) will be held on Monday, September 9, 2013 on the NIH main campus in Building 31C, 6th Floor, Conference Room 10, Bethesda, Maryland.

2014 Lurie Prize in Biomedical Sciences

The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) is accepting nominations for the 2014 Lurie Prize in the Biomedical Sciences. This is an annual award that recognizes outstanding achievements by a young scientist in biomedical research. The deadline for nominations is October 1, 2013, 1 p.m. EDT.

NIH Commits $24 Million Annually for Big Data Centers of Excellence

The National Institutes of Health will fund up to $24 million per year for four years to establish six to eight investigator-initiated Big Data to Knowledge Centers of Excellence.

Request for Applications: FaceBase 2

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research is accepting for applications for FaceBase 2. August 22, 2013, is the application deadline.

Congress Preparing for August Recess Constituent Outreach Activities

Now through September 6, members of Congress and many of their staffers are working from home – in a sense. The month-long congressional recess, or District Work Period as some prefer, gives members of Congress a prolonged opportunity to engage their constituents. Many take the opportunity to hold town-hall forums, visit federally supported-project sites (i.e. research facilities) and attend community events. 

Be Part of AADR’s Advocate in Your State Initiative

According to the 2012 AADR membership survey, three out of four AADR members believe that advocacy is necessary for research. Help us to personalize the case for sustained federal investments in research and join AADR’s advocacy efforts at the grassroots level by participating in Advocate in Your State, taking place the entire month of August. 

New Research Suggests that Gingival Stem Cells Can be Used in Tissue Regeneration

The International and American Associations for Dental (IADR/AADR) recently published a paper titled “Gingivae Contain Neural-crest- and Mesoderm-derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells.”

Committees are the backbone of the IADR and AADR, and each year the Associations seek a wide variety of volunteers, representing as many geographic areas and scientific disciplines as possible, to fill committee vacancies.

IADR and AADR are encouraging members to submit photos of researchers working in their labs, clinics or in the field for consideration in upcoming IADR and AADR marketing and communications pieces.

AADR is now accepting applications for the 2014 awards and fellowships. Through numerous sponsorships and donations, the Association is able to administer several awards and fellowships each year.

Strides in Science

Mark Mooney, M.S., Ph.D., is professor and chair of the Department of Oral Biology and holds joint appointments in the Departments of, Anthropology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Orthodontics, and Communication and Speech Disorders in the Schools of Dental Medicine and Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He received his M.S. in biological psychology at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois, and his Ph.D. in physical anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh.

University at Buffalo Receives $1.2 Million Training Grant

The Department of Oral Biology in the University at Buffalo, New York, School of Dental Medicine has been awarded a $1.2 million NIH Training Grant.

Sharon Gordon Named the Associate Dean of Research at the ECU School of Dental Medicine

Past AADR Board Member Sharon M. Gordon has been named associate dean for research and chair of foundational sciences at the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. Gordon is the first person to hold this position.

CDC Announces New Director for the Division of Oral Health

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has announced that effective October 6, 2013, Katherine A. Weno will join the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as director, Division of Oral Health.
