Members of Congress are meeting this month to discuss final funding
levels for fiscal year 2014. AADR members should urge Congress to stop
sequestration and replace it with a balanced plan that recognizes the
significant cuts already made to discretionary programs.

|Deep Sequencing Identifies Ethnicity-Specific Bacterial Signatures in the Oral Microbiome|
New research finds that
oral bacteria create a 'fingerprint' in your mouth. This study, written by lead
author and AADR member Purnima Kumar,
is published in PLOS One.
|NIH Funding Opportunities|
Institutes of Health has issued new funding opportunities that may be of
interest to you as an AADR member.
|NIH Loan Repayment Programs - Apply Now for 2014 Awards|
The National Institutes of Health’s
Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs) is accepting applications for 2014 loan
repayment awards. The current cycle has been extended through December 2, 2013.

The Association of American

The NIH Medical Research
Scholars Program (MSRP) is a
comprehensive, year-long research enrichment program designed to attract the
most creative, research-oriented medical, dental, and veterinary students to
the intramural campus of the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland.
|HHMI Research Opportunities for Dental Students at U.S. Schools|
In order to encourage more medical, dental and
veterinary students to pursue academic and research careers, the Howard Hughes
Medical Institute (HHMI) offers outstanding “year-out” and summer research
training programs for students enrolled in schools in the U.S.
|Strides in Science – Perspectives From an HHMI Medical Research Fellow|
In May 2013, AADR member Jane Shin began her 2013 student
fellowship in the HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program. Shin is a D.M.D. student at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
Shin was one of 66 students selected from more than 200 applicants.
|Registration is Open for the “Destination Europe” Event in San Francisco|
The next "Destination Europe" event will take place December 12-13, 2013 in San Francisco, California. “Destination Europe”
promotes awareness of the funding and career opportunities offered in Europe to
researchers from anywhere in the world, as well as offering an insight to some
of the excellent research activities.
|AADR Member David J. Mooney is Elected to the IOM|
Last month the National Academies of Science -
Institute of Medicine announced its newest members. AADR is pleased to know
that David. J. Mooney has been named as a member of the IOM.
|AADR Members Are Recognized at the 2013 ADA/DENTSPLY Student Clinician Research Award Program and Reception|
International assembled the 54th Annual ADA/DENTSPLY Student
Clinician Research Award Program and Reception on November 2, 2013. The awards
program took place in New Orleans, Louisiana, during the 2013 ADA Annual
Session at the Le Petit Theatre. AADR congratulates its members who were recognized
at this event.
