WHAT'S NEW

New AADR Award Opportunity - The Student Advocate of the Year Award
This year the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) National Student Research Group (NSRG) along with the AADR Government Affairs Committee (GAC) would like to recognize a student for outstanding contributions in advocacy for oral health research by awarding The Student Advocate of the Year Award. The deadline to apply for this award is January 21, 2014.

The recipient will receive travel and a one night hotel accommodation for participation in the April 8, 2014 AADR/ADEA Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill program. To apply, complete the application form and brief essay questions by January 21, 2014.

AADR Provides Support to the Foundation for the NIH for a Dental Student in the NIH Medical Research Scholars Program

The American Association for Dental Research (AADR), with the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH), has announced that AADR will provide $75,000 funding to support one dental student competitively selected to participate in the 2014-2015 NIH Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP).

AADR/CADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition – Presenter Pre-Registration Deadline is January 15
January 15, 2014, is the deadline for presenters to register to attend the 43rd Annual Meeting & Exhibition of the American Association for Dental Research, March 19-22, 2014, in Charlotte, N.C., USA. This meeting will be held in conjunction with the 38th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR). After you register, remember to book your hotel to take advantage of special AADR hotel room rates.  
January 13 – Abstract Submission Deadline for the IADR/AMER General Session in Cape Town, South Africa
January 13, 2014, 11:59 p.m. PST is the deadline to submit your abstract for presentation consideration at the 92nd General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research. This meeting will be held in conjunction with the IADR Africa/Middle East Regional Meeting, in Cape Town, South Africa, June 25-28, 2014.

IADR/AADR Launch NEW Affiliate Membership Category for Clinicians, Advocates and Educators

IADR/AADR are pleased to announce that they have launched a membership category designed especially clinicians, advocates and educators. This new membership category, Affiliate Membership, was created for people who are not primarily involved in research but have an interest in keeping up with the latest research, e.g., practicing healthcare professionals, dental professionals involved in PBRNs or evidence-based dentistry, patient advocates, or healthcare educators with primary teaching responsibility.

Complimentary Registration is Open for the 2014 AADR/ADEA Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill
The 2014 AADR/ADEA Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill will take place on April 8, 2014, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The program will begin in the Rayburn House Office Building Gold Room (#2168).

The January 12, 2014, deadline is fast approaching to submit your paper for the Journal of Dental Research clinical supplement. This fourth supplement will encompass all areas of clinical research in the dental, oral and craniofacial sciences, and it will bring emerging contributions in discovery and translational science to clinical application for the healthcare community.
Call for Papers in JDR Special Issue
The Journal of Dental Research is excited to announce the publication of a special issue in the fall of 2014 highlighting the latest developments in novel materials and technologies for dental, oral and craniofacial sciences. The issue will be of interest to biomaterials scientists, dental researchers and practitioners.
AADR Legislative Consultant Nicholas Cavarocchi, Sr. Retires

Oral health research advocate Nicholas Cavarocchi, Sr. has retired from CRD Associates after being the AADR legislative consultant for 33 years. Throughout his career, he worked on every facet of health policy, from organizing an industry/patient coalition that led to the creation of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases at the National Institutes of Health to co-founding the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research, the preeminent advocacy voice for supporting biomedical research.

NIH to Fund Research Workforce Diversity Program
The National Institutes of Health is releasing three new funding opportunity announcements (FOAs) to develop approaches to engage researchers, especially from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical sciences, and prepare them to thrive in NIH-funded research careers.
The NIH Medical Research Scholars Program Deadline is January 15, 2014
January 15, 2014, is the deadline to apply for the NIH Medical Research Scholars Program (MSRP), which is a comprehensive, year-long research enrichment program designed to attract the most creative, research-oriented medical, dental, and veterinary students to the intramural campus of the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland.
NIH Announces Six Funding Opportunities for the BRAIN Initiative in Fiscal 2014
The National Institutes of Health has announced that it is releasing funding opportunities to build a new arsenal of tools and technologies for unlocking the mysteries of the brain. The NIH action is in support of President Obama’s Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative.

NHSC Loan Repayment Program
The 2014 National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program application cycle will open soon. This program is open to licensed primary care medical, dental, and mental and behavioral health providers who are employed or seeking employment at approved sites. 
HHMI Research Opportunities for Dental Students at U.S. Schools
In order to encourage more medical, dental and veterinary students to pursue academic and research careers, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) offers outstanding “year-out” and summer research training programs for students enrolled in schools in the U.S. HHMI is interested in increasing the number of dental students applying for these programs. 
Call for Submissions - Young Investigators Initiative Grant Mentoring Program and Career Development Program
The United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) and Bone and Joint Canada are dedicated to raising public awareness and to increasing research of musculoskeletal diseases. It is apparent that research in the musculoskeletal diseases performed by young investigators is not keeping pace with the increasing burden of these diseases.
Strides in Science

Mary Walker, D.D.S., Ph.D., is associate dean for research and graduate programs and professor in the departments of oral and craniofacial sciences and restorative dentistry at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Dentistry. She was previously a faculty member at the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry. Prior to her academic career, Walker owned a solo general dentistry practice. 

Practice-Based Research in the National Dental PBRN: Translating Research Into Everyday Practice
If you’re attending the 2014 AADR/CADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition you may want to register to attend the Saturday Workshop on Practice-Based Research in the National Dental PBRN: Translating Research Into Everyday Practice. This workshop will take place at the AADR/CADR Annual Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, on Saturday, March 22 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
