Gert Quigley Fellowship Application Deadline Extended to April 11
AADR has extended the deadline for applications for the Gert Quigley Public Policy Fellowship. The new deadline is tomorrow, April 11. The Gert Quigley Public Policy Fellowship provides a unique and exciting learning experience both in Washington, DC and through grassroots efforts at the participant’s local university or institution. This fellowship is designed to familiarize dental school, Ph.D., or dual degree students with the federal legislative process as it relates to basic and translational dental and craniofacial research, as well as research on the oral health care delivery system. The applicant must be a member of the AADR National Student Research Group and a D.M.D./D.D.S., Ph.D. or a dual degree student.

Advocacy Day Recap

On April 8, 2014, oral health scientists, educators and students from throughout the country participated in the 2014 AADR/ADEA Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill. AADR and ADEA members from 22 states and the District of Columbia conducted over 70 meetings with members of Congress.

AADR Submits Testimony Urging Congress to Increase Funding for NIH/NIDCR

On March 28, AADR President Timothy DeRouen submitted written testimony on behalf of AADR urging Congress to provide $32 billion for the National Institutes of Health and $425 million for the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research in the fiscal year 2015 Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriation bill.

Call for Papers in JDR Special Issue

April 30, 2014, is the manuscript submission deadline for the Journal of Dental Research special issue highlighting the latest developments in novel materials and technologies for dental, oral and craniofacial sciences.

Save the Date for the 7th AADR Fall Focused Symposium

The 7th AADR Fall Focused Symposium: Research Translated into Practice will be held in conjunction with the ADA 2014 – America's Dental Meeting. This meeting will take place October 7-8, 2014, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. This two-day symposium will allow you to view scientific posters, attend panel discussions and collaborate with colleagues.

New! ADA/AADR Evidence-Based Dentistry Faculty Award

The American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) have established a faculty award for Evidence-Based Dentistry (EBD). The goal of this award is to acknowledge a dental school faculty member who has made significant contributions to implement and advance EBD. This award is supported by a contribution from Proctor and Gamble. 

Research Opportunities

Several research opportunities have been posted to the IADR/AADR Online Career Center. The Online Career Center is designed to help connect IADR/AADR members with new employment opportunities. 

Strides in Science

Jill Helms, D.D.S., Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Surgery at Stanford University, California. Prior to Stanford, Helms spent eight years at the University of California, San Francisco, where she was the director of the molecular and cellular biology laboratory in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. 

NIH Funding Opportunities

The National Institutes of Health have released Funding Opportunity Announcements that may be of interest to you. The purpose of the following two funding opportunity announcements is to encourage the establishment of measures of specific behavioral or social phenomena that can be used to test causal hypotheses about behavioral and social contributors to dental, oral or craniofacial diseases. 

NIH IRB Internship Program Announcement Deadline is April 30

The Department of Bioethics, National Institutes of Health (NIH), in cooperation with the NIH Combined NeuroScience IRB and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) Education and Community Involvement Branch, offers an IRB internship for a cohort of up to four qualified candidates every fall, subject to funding. 

DTA Foundation to Award $200,000 for 8 Grants in 2014 - Application Deadline is May 28

The Dental Trade Alliance (DTA) Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2014 grant programs. 

Award Opportunity The Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists
Science/AAAS and SciLifeLab, a coordinated effort of four universities, have joined forces in creating the Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists. The prize is awarded annually to one young scientist for outstanding life science research for which he/she was awarded a doctoral degree in the previous year. 
The Forsyth Institute to Host an Event to Support Science

On June 5, 2014, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., The Forsyth Institute (an AADR Institutional Section Member) will host an event in support of science. Proceeds from the event will help advance Forsyth’s mission to improve oral and overall health. 

Utah Legislature Passes Resolution Recognizing the University of Utah School of Dentistry for Commitment to Oral Care for Underserved Populations
The Utah Legislature recently recognized the University of Utah School of Dentistry (an AADR Institutional Section Member) for its commitment to providing critical oral health care for the state’s underserved populations. The legislative body approved a resolution recognizing the school following the testimony of Dean Rena D’Souza, D.D.S., Ph.D., and Associate Dean for Research Glen R. Hanson (both are AADR members) who spoke to both House and Senate committees about the need for good oral health among all Utah citizens.
