Elections Results Announced: AADR Elects Garcia, IADR Elects Walls

Members of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) have elected Raul I. Garcia as the AADR vice president for 2015-2016. He will take office at the conclusion of the 44th AADR Annual Meeting, held in Boston, Mass., USA, March 11-14, 2015.

Garcia is professor and chair, Department of Health Policy & Health Services Research at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. He earned his A.B. from Harvard College, Cambridge, Mass., USA; his D.M.D. from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, certificate in periodontology and M.Med.Sc. in oral biology from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Cambridge, Mass., USA.

He joined IADR/AADR in 1977 and has remained an active member. Garcia has served on the JDR Editorial Board, the IADR/AADR Publications Committee and has served as an AADR Councilor. Currently he is the North American Regional Councilor for IADR.

Members of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) have elected Angus Walls as the IADR vice president for 2015-2016. He will take office at the conclusion of the 93rd IADR General Session, held in Boston, Mass., USA, March 11-14, 2015.

Walls is the director of the Edinburgh Dental Institute, a postgraduate research and training institute of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine of the University of Edinburgh, UK. Prior to taking up this position in January of 2013, Walls worked for 30 years at the University of Newcastle.

He joined IADR in 1983. He has served on several IADR Committees including the IADR Hatton Awards Committee, Constitution Committee and the JDR Editorial Board. He served as the IADR treasurer from 2005-2009. Additionally, he was involved in the establishment of the IADR Pan European Federation (which is now the IADR Pan European Region). In 2003 he was awarded the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award for Geriatric Oral Research.

Anne C.R. Tanner has been elected as the AADR Publications Committee Member. Tanner is a senior member of staff in the Microbiology Department at the Forsyth Institute, Boston, Mass., USA. She has been an IADR/AADR member since 1974 and has served as the AADR Boston Section president and served on the JDR Editorial Board.

Save the Date: 2015 AADR/ADEA Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill

April 14, 2015
9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The need for advocacy on behalf of biomedical research is needed. In 2015 a newly elected Congress with fresh priorities will need to better understand the importance of dental, oral and craniofacial research. Your participation in the 2015 AADR/ADEA Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill is necessary to amplify the message to Congress that cutting federal funding is harmful and increased investments in biomedical research are needed for the health of the public. 

Federal Funding Update

On the evening of December 9 Congress released the text of the long awaited fiscal year 2015 Omnibus Appropriations bill, which will provide discretionary funding through September 30, 2015 for almost all federal agencies including the Department of Health and Human Services.

JDR Publishes Special Issue on Novel Dental Biomaterials and Technologies

The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have published a special themed issue of the Journal of Dental Research (JDR) centered on novel dental biomaterials and technologies. Although the Associations have published clinical supplements to the JDR, this is the first special themed issue the Associations have published.

Ad Council Honors Kids' Healthy Mouths Campaign PSAs with Top Creative Award for Children's Oral Health Campaign

Last month, the Ad Council recognized the Kids' Healthy Mouths campaign earned with the Gold Bell for Creative Excellence. 

Researchers at UCLA Develop non-Invasive Method to Detect Tumor-causing Mutations in Saliva

A research team led by AADR Past President David Wong, University of California Lost Angeles, completed a study that utilized a novel technology called electric field-induced release and measurement (EFIRM) to test lung cancer patients’ saliva for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene mutations, a sign of lung cancer, which can be treated by medication such as thymidine kinase inhibitors.

The NIH Common Fund Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) program has a number of active Funding Opportunity Announcements related to research education and research training. 

FOA: Research on Chronic Overlapping Pain Conditions

Please consider applying for these NIH funding opportunities on research on chronic overlapping pain conditions. Recent clinical findings suggest that substantial overlap may exist between chronic pain conditions. Individuals diagnosed with one disorder often exhibit characteristics of additional chronic painful conditions or transition to other diagnostic categories. 

HHMI Research Opportunities for Dental Students at U.S. Schools

In order to encourage more medical, dental and veterinary students to pursue academic and research careers, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) offers outstanding “year-out” and summer research training programs for students enrolled in schools in the U.S. HHMI is interested in increasing the number of dental students applying for these programs. Women and under-represented minorities are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applications Being Accepted for the HSDM and Forsyth Research Academy

Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM), Boston, Mass., USA, and The Forsyth Institute, Cambridge, Mass., USA, have announced a joint Research Academy that will offer an unparalleled three-year (minimum) structured Doctor of Medical Sciences (D.M.Sc.-only) research-intensive degree in oral biology. Under the mentorship of world-renowned scientists, participants will undertake an intensive research training experience in laboratories at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) or Forsyth. 

Soft Bones, Inc. Research Grant

A Soft Bones Research Grant will again be offered for 2015 and applications for funding are now being accepted until December 15, 2014. 

Strides in Science

Bennett T. Amaechi, B.Sc., B.D.S., M.Sc., Ph.D., F.A.D.I., is a professor of dentistry and director of cariology in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He has been with the University since 2001. He earned his B.Sc., B.D.S. from the University of Ife, Nigeria (now Obafemi Awolowo University), his M.Sc. from Guy's Hospital Dental School, University of London, UK, and his Ph.D. from the University of Liverpool.
