Save the Date for the 2016 AADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition
Make plans to attend the 45th Annual Meeting & Exhibition of the AADR, March 16-19, 2016, in Los Angeles, Calif., USA. This meeting will be held in conjunction with the 40th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research. The abstract submission cycle will open in July 2015 with a deadline of October 13, 2015. Please visit www.aadr.org/aaam for more information as it becomes available.

The 8th AADR Fall Focused Symposium: Advances in the Biology and Management of Orofacial Pain will be held in conjunction with ADA 2015 - America's Dental Meeting, November 3-4, 2015, in Washington, D.C., USA. Call for Papers in JDR Special Issue – Deadline is April 30

April 30, 2015 is the deadline to submit manuscripts  to the Journal of Dental Research for a special issue in the Fall 2015 highlighting the latest developments in the field of craniofacial stem cells. This peer-reviewed special issue will provide an assessment of the current state-of-the-art of the biology of stem cells in craniofacial development and health, as well as their role in the etiology of diseases/conditions affecting craniofacial tissues. The issue will be of interest to all oral health researchers and practitioners.

Donate for Research

Dental research created a profession. In the early decades of the last century, investments in dental research moved a trade to a profession. From the fluoridation of public water supplies – a crowning public health achievement of the 20th Century – to high-speed handpieces, dental composites and ceramic restorations, periodontal diagnostics and therapeutics, and more biologic approaches to replacing lost tissues, it was the investments in dental research that defined us as a profession.

AADR Submits Testimony Urging Congress to Increase Funding for NIH and NIDCR

On April 1, AADR President Paul Krebsbach submitted written testimony on behalf of AADR urging Congress to provide at least $32 billion for the National Institutes of Health and $425 million for the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research in the fiscal year 2016 Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriation bill. 

Budget Update

Last month, Congress approved their budget resolutions by a 52-46 vote in the Senate and a 228-199 vote in the House. The budget resolutions essentially are a blueprint laying out Congressional priorities for the next year. 

Gert Quigley Fellowship Applications Due Tomorrow

AADR has extended the deadline for applications for the Gert Quigley Government Affairs Fellowship. Applications are now due tomorrow, April 10, 2015.

NIH Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Funding Opportunities

The NIH Common Fund Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) program has a number of active Funding Opportunity Announcements related to research education and research training.

“Big Data for Oral Health Knowledge” Workshop at IADR/AADR/CADR General Session a Success

About 50 stakeholders from the international dental research community, industry and representatives from  associations and organizations around the globe met in Boston, Mass., USA on March 14 in conjunction with the 2015 IADR/AADR/CADR General Session for the full-day workshop “Big Data for Oral Health Knowledge; How to get the Big Answers.” 

PCORI Offering $90 Million in Call For Pragmatic Clinical Studies

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is accepting Letters of Intent (LOIs) through its latest funding announcement under the Pragmatic Clinical Studies initiative. This initiative is offering up to $90 million in support for projects evaluating the effectiveness of different care options in "real-world" settings. 

Call for Nominations

Any AADR member may nominate individuals for AADR Vice-president or AADR Representative to the IADR/AADR Publications Committee. Names of potential candidates must be received by August 3, 2015.

Can You Serve on a Committee?

Committees are the backbone of the IADR and AADR, and each year the Associations seek a wide variety of volunteers, representing as many geographic areas and scientific disciplines as possible, to fill committee vacancies. 

Call for Nominations: Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Dental Research

The Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Dental Research is sponsored by the American Dental Association together with Church & Dwight Co., Inc. Established in 1985 and presented every three years, the Award honors individuals who, through basic or clinical research, have contributed to the advancement of the profession of dentistry or to major improvement in the oral health of the public. 

Call for Nominations: ADA Foundation Dr. David Whiston Leadership Awards

The ADA Foundation is accepting nominations for the Dr. David Whiston Leadership Awards. Nominees must be early career dentists or students who have demonstrated the ability to create a vision and motivate others to achieve that vision, as well as focus on utilizing those traits for the greater good through activities that help advance the oral health of the public and/or the underserved. 

New Tobacco Atlas Details Scale and Harms of Tobacco Epidemic

The Tobacco Atlas, Fifth Edition ("The Atlas"), and its companion mobile app and website TobaccoAtlas.org, were unveiled last month by the American Cancer Society and World Lung Foundation at the 16th World Conference on Tobacco or Health.

Strides in Science

This month, AADR is featuring AADR Institutional Section Member the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry in the Strides in Science. AADR interviewed Dean John D.B. Featherstone to learn more about the research opportunities available to students and the scientific advances the school is making. 

8th International Conference on Ethics in Biology, Engineering & Medicine (ICEBEM 2015)

The 8th International Conference on Ethics in Biology, Engineering & Medicine (ICEBEM 2015) will be held in Brooklyn, New York, April 24-26, 2015. Previously this conference was called the International Conference on Ethical Issues in Biomedical Engineering and it has been held every other year for last sixteen years.
