WHAT’S NEW

Remember to Access the 2015 IADR/AADR/CADR General Session Recordings in the Knowledge Community
Recordings from the 93rd General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research are available in the IADR/AADR Knowledge Community. This meeting, which was held in conjunction with the 44th Annual Meeting of the AADR and the 39th Annual Meeting of the CADR, took place March 11-14, 2015, in Boston, Mass., USA. 

The Knowledge Community houses recordings of cutting-edge presentations from IADR and AADR meetings, and at the conclusion of each recorded session a brief quiz may be completed for ADA CERP credit. As part of your membership benefit, remember to take advantage of this premium opportunity to earn continuing education credits and to absorb some of the science that was shared at meetings by logging in to the IADR members-only section and selecting “IADR/AADR Knowledge Community” under “Educational Resources.”

IADR Participates in PAHO/WHO International Consultation to Seek Answers to HPV Questions

Last month, experts from IADR participated in an international consultation that was organized by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO). In addition to IADR, the consultation brought together representatives from the U.S. National Institutes of Health-National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIH-NIDCR), the American Dental Association (ADA) and others to examine what is known about the epidemiology and biology of human papillomavirus (HPV) related oral cancer, its risk factors, prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment.

Call for Abstracts and Proposals: 2016 AADR/CADR Annual Meeting


Submit your session proposal or abstract now for the 45th Annual Meeting & Exhibition of the American Association for Dental Research, held in conjunction with the 40th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research. This combined meeting will take place in Los Angeles, Calif., USA, March 16-19, 2016. The AADR/CADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition will provide scientists and researchers throughout the world with the opportunity to present, discuss and critique their investigations.

The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have announced that Dr. Jocelyne Feine has been selected as the inaugural Editor of JDR Clinical & Translational Research. She began her term on Friday, August 7, 2015.

JDR Articles Discuss Diet, Dental Caries and Health Policy

This week, IADR/AADR published two reports including a critical review titled “Diet and Dental Caries - the Pivotal Role of Free Sugars Reemphasized.” In this study, authors Aubrey Sheiham, University College London, England; and W. Philip James, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, England, demonstrate the sensitivity of cariogenesis (the development of caries) to even very low sugars intakes.

AADR is accepting applications for the AADR Fellows Program, which is designed to recognize leaders of AADR and individuals who have served AADR in various ways throughout their careers. Through this Program, AADR will strengthen its mission of supporting and representing the oral health research community, which supports the overall AADR mission.

Attention Deans and Research Deans: AADR to Offer Academic Institutions Funding to Support a Student Research Day Award

AADR is instituting the AADR Student Research Day Award and encouraging academic institutions involved in dental, oral, and craniofacial research to apply for it. This new award is designed to recognize the best presentation at an academic institution’s research day competition. The award shall be determined by the institution’s judging committee.

Donate for Research

Dental research created a profession. In the early decades of the last century, investments in dental research moved a trade to a profession. From the fluoridation of public water supplies – a crowning public health achievement of the 20th Century – to high-speed handpieces, dental composites and ceramic restorations, periodontal diagnostics and therapeutics, and more biologic approaches to replacing lost tissues, it was the investments in dental research that defined us as a profession.

2016-2017 NIH Medical Research Scholars Program

The application site for the 2016-2017 NIH Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP) will open on October 1, 2015, with a submission deadline of January 15, 2016. AADR has renewed its commitment to the program and will co-sponsor the program through a $75,000 donation to the Foundation for the NIH.

Travel Grant Opportunity for Upcoming Genomics Conference

The Task Force on Design and Analysis in Oral Health Research is offering five travel grants to post-graduate students in dentistry who have an interest in genomics. The travel grant is to attend a conference being held at the ADA on Oct. 28-29, 2015, titled “Navigating in the Sea of Genomic Data.” The conference, which is being presented by the ADA in collaboration with the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Oral Health Research, will bring together renowned genomic experts to discuss research on genetic associations with disease, the use of genetic tests for disease, and will help inform the design and analysis of genomic studies of oral diseases.

David E. Barmes Global Health Lecture: Medical Research and Capacity Building for Development: The Experience of Rwanda

Dr. Agnes Binagwaho, Minister of Health of the Republic of Rwanda, delivered the 2015 David E. Barmes Global Health Lecture on the National Institute of Health (NIH) campus in Bethesda, Md. on July 29, 2015. The title of her talk was "Medical Research and Capacity Building for Development: The Experience of Rwanda."

Strides in Science

Alexandre DaSilva, D.D.S., D.Med.Sc., is an assistant professor at the Biologic & Materials Sciences Department at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. There, he is also the director of H.O.P.E. (Headache & Orofacial Pain Effort), which is a multidisciplinary collaborative effort to investigate the brain as a research and therapeutic target for chronic trigeminal pain disorders.

ADA Honors AADR Member Steven Offenbacher with Gold Medal Award

AADR member Steven Offenbacher, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been named the 2015 winner of the ADA’s Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Dental Research in recognition of his multidisciplinary approach to research.  Offenbacher’s work has been published by prominent journals outside the field of dentistry, including those of genetics, obstetrics, cardiology, neonatology and diabetes.
