WHAT’S NEW

AADR Fellows Program: December 22 is the Extended Application Deadline
AADR is accepting applications for the AADR Fellows Program, which is designed to recognize leaders of AADR and individuals who have served AADR in various ways throughout their careers. Through this Program, AADR will strengthen its mission of supporting and representing the oral health research community, which supports the overall AADR mission.

The AADR Fellows Program is open to active AADR members. Applicants who are accepted into the AADR Fellows Program will receive the following benefits upon induction: recognition at the AADR Annual Meeting Opening Ceremonies; recognition in the AADR Science Advocate; an AADR Fellows Program lapel pin; and opportunities to network with other Fellows at the Fellows lounge at the AADR Annual Meeting.

Call for Submissions: JDR Special Issue on Orofacial Pain

The Journal of Dental Research has announced the publication of a special issue in 2016 highlighting the latest developments in the field of chronic orofacial pain. This peer-reviewed special issue will provide an assessment of the current state-of-the-art of the biology, diagnosis and clinical management of pain disorders associated with the dental, oral and craniofacial complex. The issue will be of interest to students, dental researchers and practitioners involved in the biology, translational research and management of pain. Ronald Dubner is the guest editor for this special issue.

Complimentary Advocacy Day Registration Opens Today! Let's Ask Congress to Support Research and Oral Health!
Tuesday, February 23, 2016
9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Join AADR on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. for our annual Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill. Our advocacy day is being held earlier this year to maximize our impact with Congress and to better influence the annual funding process. In a time of limited resources it is vitally important that Congress hears from AADR members about the value of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), your research and other oral health programs. The AADR Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill will include a morning key issues briefing and training session; and an afternoon of individual and/or small group meetings with participants' members of Congress and their staff.

The Student Advocate of the Year Award

January 11, 2016, is the application deadline for The Student Advocate of the Year Award. This award allows AADR, the NSRG and the AADR Government Affairs Committee to recognize a student for outstanding contributions in advocacy for oral health research. The recipient will receive travel and a one night hotel accommodation for participation in the 2016 AADR Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill program.

Call for Applications! 2016 AADR Student Research Fellowship Program

Current U.S. dental students may submit an application to the AADR Student Research Fellowship Program. Please keep in mind the new requirements:

  1. A maximum of five (5) applications per institution will be accepted for review; and 
  2. A maximum of one student applicant per faculty advisor will be allowed.

NIH Request for Information: Strategies to Enhance Diversity in the Physician-Scientist Workforce

The NIH Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) charged a Working Group with analyzing the composition and size of the physician-scientist biomedical workforce (defined as individuals with MD, DO, DDS/DMD, DVM/VMD degrees and nurses with research doctoral degrees who devote the majority of their time to biomedical research), and with making recommendations for actions that should be taken to sustain and strengthen it.

NIDCR Award for Sustaining Outstanding Achievement in Research (SOAR) (R35)

NIDCR has announced the Award for Sustaining Outstanding Achievement in Research (SOAR) to provide longer-term support to experienced NIDCR-funded investigators, with outstanding records of research productivity entering their mid-career stage.  It is expected that the SOAR Award will propel the investigator along this career trajectory and embark on ambitious longer-term projects of extraordinary potential within the mission of NIDCR.

NIDCR Accepting Applications for 2016–2017 Residency Program in Dental Public Health

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) sponsors a 12-month full-time or 12-month equivalent part-time Residency Program in Dental Public Health. The Residency Program provides a formal training opportunity for dentists planning careers in dental public health, with an emphasis on oral and craniofacial, health-related epidemiologic research.

2016-2017 NIH Medical Research Scholars Program

The application site for the 2016-2017 NIH Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP) is now open.  AADR has renewed its commitment to the program and will co-sponsor the program through a $75,000 donation to the Foundation for the NIH provided at least one successful applicant is a dental student.

Dental, medical and veterinary students are in a unique position to advance biomedical research and translate findings from the lab into the treatment of disease. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Medical Fellows Program gives these students a chance to focus on a research project full-time and determine how they can incorporate research into their professional careers.

Grant Opportunities Available for Cleft Palate Research

The Cleft Palate Foundation is offering research grants in 2016 for projects related to cleft palate and/or craniofacial anomalies. AADR Member Luiz Meirelles is Named the ADA Director of Professional Product Review and Standards

AADR member Luiz Meirelles has accepted the role of director of professional product review and standards for the American Dental Association (ADA). He will provide overall leadership and strategic direction of the ADA’s Professional Product Review (PPR) program and Dental Material Standards development. Prior to accepting this position with the ADA, he served as assistant professor of dentistry at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Eastman Institute.
