Call for Submissions: JDR Special Issue on Orofacial Pain

March 31, 2016, is the deadline to submit manuscripts for publication consideration in the Journal of Dental Research special issue on orofacial pain. This issue will highlight the latest developments in the field of chronic orofacial pain. This peer-reviewed special issue will provide an assessment of the current state-of-the-art of the biology, diagnosis and clinical management of pain disorders associated with the dental, oral and craniofacial complex.

The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) Board of Directors announced last month that AADR will continue the activities of the Friends of National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (FNIDCR) after the latter ceased operations at the end of 2015.

Congress Approves Funding Bill

Last month, Congress approved the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2015, known as the “FY16 Omnibus Bill,” by vote of 316-113 in the US House of Representatives and a vote of 65-33 in the US Senate. The President is expected to sign this bill into law. This legislation provides funding for the remainder of fiscal year 2016. Specifically, $32.084 billion, a $2 billion increase for the National Institutes of Health and $415.5 million, a $15.7 million increase for the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. This is the most significant increase for NIH in over a decade.

Dietary Guidelines Released

Last week, the Department of Health and Human Services released the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines, which are utilized to encourage Americans to eat a healthier diet. Importantly, the guidelines encourage Americans to consume less than 10% of calories per day from added sugars.

Food Preservative Kills Cancer Cells, Superbugs

AADR member Yvonne Kapila, researcher at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, is investigating the properties of a common food preservative, nisin, which may lead to its use as a potential novel therapeutic for head and neck cancers.

Donate for Research

Dental research created a profession. In the early decades of the last century, investments in dental research moved a trade to a profession. From the fluoridation of public water supplies – a crowning public health achievement of the 20th Century – to high-speed handpieces, dental composites and ceramic restorations, periodontal diagnostics and therapeutics, and more biologic approaches to replacing lost tissues, it was the investments in dental research that defined us as a profession.

AADR Student Research Day Award

AADR encourages academic institutions involved in dental, oral, and craniofacial research to apply for the AADR Student Research Day Award. This new award is designed to recognize the best presentation at an academic institution’s research day competition. The award shall be determined by the institution’s judging committee.

January 19 Application Deadline: 2016 AADR Student Research Fellowship Program

Current U.S. dental students may submit an application to the AADR Student Research Fellowship Program. Please keep in mind the new requirements:

  1. A maximum of five (5) applications per institution will be accepted for review; and 
  2. A maximum of one student applicant per faculty advisor will be allowed.

University of Washington School of Dentistry Summer Institute

Applications are now being accepted for the 25th Summer Institute in Clinical Dental Research Methods, to be held June 27-August 5, 2016, at the University of Washington, Seattle. The program is designed for dental faculty and other oral health professionals who wish to acquire skills in research methodology specifically targeted for clinical research.

Paula Fives-Taylor Mini-Symposium for Young Investigators

Plans are currently underway for the second annual mini-symposium for young investigators, which will be held to honor the memory of the late Dr. Paula Fives-Taylor, who passed away in January of 2015. Please note that the Paula Fives-Taylor Mini-Symposium for Young Investigators is scheduled to take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. prior to the AADR/CADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition.

NIDCR Accepting Applications for 2016–2017 Residency Program in Dental Public Health

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) sponsors a 12-month full-time or 12-month equivalent part-time Residency Program in Dental Public Health. The Residency Program provides a formal training opportunity for dentists planning careers in dental public health, with an emphasis on oral and craniofacial, health-related epidemiologic research.

2016-2017 NIH Medical Research Scholars Program

The application site for the 2016-2017 NIH Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP) is now open.  AADR has renewed its commitment to the program and will co-sponsor the program through a $75,000 donation to the Foundation for the NIH provided at least one successful applicant is a dental student.

Grant Opportunities Available for Cleft Palate Research

The Cleft Palate Foundation is offering research grants in 2016 for projects related to cleft-craniofacial anomalies. Research grants are each awarded for a period of one year and range from $5,000 to $24,000 in funding.

Health Volunteers Oversees (HVO) has launched a program designed to develop and support a cadre of future leaders in the health care sector in resource-scarce countries. DeSH Funding Opportunities

Funded by the George E. Richmond Foundation, the Program in Dentistry, the Social Sciences, and Health (DeSH) offers an opportunity for individuals who are enrolled in or have completed a D.D.S. or D.M.D. from any institution to earn a Ph.D. from a social science program at the University of Chicago. There, she is also director academic program, Oral Health Science Ph.D. Program, in the School of Dentistry.

The ADEAGies Foundation has announced that AADR members Mark C. Herzberg, 1993-2004 editor of the IADR/AADR Journal of Dental Research, and Harold C. Slavkin, 1993-1994 AADR president, are winners of the William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation and Achievement in Academic Dentistry and Oral Health. Along with six other winners, Herzberg and Slavkin will be recognized on March 14, 2016, during a special celebration held in conjunction with the 2016 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in Denver, Colorado.

AADR Member John Bartlett Joins The Ohio State University College as New Associate Dean for Research


AADR member John Bartlett has been appointed as the associate dean for research at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry.He joined the college in that capacity after serving as chair of the Department of Mineralized Tissue Biology at the Forsyth Institute in Boston, Mass., where he also held an associate professor appointment in the Department of Developmental Biology at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine.
