Save the Date: February 28, 2017, AADR and FNIDCR Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill

You are invited to join AADR and the Friends of National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (FNIDCR) on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, for the AADR/FNIDCR annual advocacy day on Capitol Hill. Participants from across the country will convene in Washington, D.C. to inform Congress about the value and importance of oral health and other programs important to our community. With a new Congress and Administration, AADR and AADR members must work to ensure the future of these vital programs now more than ever.

Registration for the AADR and FNIDCR Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill will open on November 1, 2016

New This Year! Sponsorship Opportunities
To support the direct costs of this event, including travel support for some patient advocates and dental students, AADR and FNIDCR are seeking sponsorships at the levels outlined below. This is a great opportunity to get visibility for your organization on Capitol Hill and within the oral health community.

Submit your session proposal or abstract now for the 95th General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), March 22-25, 2017, in San Francisco, Calif., USA. This meeting will be held in conjunction with the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 41st Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR). The General Session will provide scientists and researchers throughout the world with the opportunity to present, discuss and critique their investigations.

Donate for Research

Dental research created a profession. In the early decades of the last century, investments in dental research moved a trade to a profession. From the fluoridation of public water supplies – a crowning public health achievement of the 20th Century – to high-speed handpieces, dental composites and ceramic restorations, periodontal diagnostics and therapeutics, and more biologic approaches to replacing lost tissues, it was the investments in dental research that defined us as a profession.

AADR Forms Legacy Society, Established by Sharon K. Grayden and Stephen C. Bayne

The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) is pleased to announce that the AADR Legacy Society has been established, thanks to a generous legacy gift from longstanding members Sharon K. Grayden and Stephen C. Bayne, who is also an AADR Past President. The AADR Legacy Society consists of individuals who have committed future assets, through estate and planned giving, to AADR, thereby ensuring support for future initiatives and growth of the Association.

Researchers Explore the Use of Nanoparticles as Treatment of Prevalent Biofilm-associated Oral Diseases
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania report a novel strategy to control plaque-biofilms using catalytic nanoparticles (CAT-NP) with peroxidase-like activity that trigger extracellular matrix degradation and cause bacterial death within acidic niches of caries-causing biofilm.

Apply for the AADR Anne D. Haffajee Fellowship

The Anne D. Haffajee Fellowship was created in recognition of Dr. Haffajee’s many contributions to clinical research in Periodontology and Oral Biology and her prominence as a female leader in the field. The immediate goal of this fellowship is to support women researchers at the early stages of their scientific careers. The long term objective of this fellowship is to increase the representation of women at the higher ranks in science and academia in the field of Oral Biology.

NIH Funding Opportunity Announcement: Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health

The NIH Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) and participating NIH Institutes and Centers invite institutional career development award applications for Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) Career Development Programs. These programs will support mentored research career development of junior faculty members, known as BIRCWH Scholars, who have recently completed clinical training or postdoctoral fellowships, and who will be engaged in interdisciplinary basic, translational, behavioral, clinical, and/or health services research relevant to women's health, and, where appropriate, the use of both sexes to better understand the influence of sex as a variable on health and disease.

The eligibility criteria for the NIH’s National Institute on Aging Grants for Early Medical/Surgical Subspecialists' Transition to Aging Research (GEMSSTAR) RFA –AG-17-012 to include dentists and dental specialists (D.D.S and D.M.D. degrees) as stated in the recently published NOT-AG-16-030. Alliance for a Cavity-Free Future, Colgate Launch Grant Program

The Canada-United States chapter of the Alliance for a Cavity-Free Future announced a new grant program in August to help fund interprofessional projects that positively impact the oral health of pregnant women and children under six years of age. The annual grant program, backed by the Colgate-Palmolive Company, will award up to $50,000 for selected projects.

The ADA Foundation will serve as the facilitator for an ADA Foundation Caries Symposium on August 17 – 19, 2016. The symposium will assemble a wide range of experts who are involved in childhood caries studies, outreach programs and public health and policy in order to address the issue of childhood caries in underserved population in the U.S.

Eighth Scientific Meeting of The TMJ Association
The TMJ Association will have its Eighth Scientific Meeting, September 11-13, 2016, in Bethesda, Maryland. In Memoriam

AADR is saddened to learn of the passing of longstanding member Donald Hay. Dr. Hay joined The Forsyth Institute faculty in 1965 and became emeritus senior staff member at The Forsyth Institute, and emeritus professor at Harvard University, School of Dental Medicine.
