The abstract submission deadline has been extended to October 17, 2016, 11:59 p.m. PDT for the 95th General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). The General Session will provide scientists and researchers throughout the world with the opportunity to present, discuss and critique their investigations.

You are invited to join AADR and Friends of National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (FNIDCR) on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, for the AADR/FNIDCR annual advocacy day on Capitol Hill. Donate for Research

Dental research created a profession. In the early decades of the last century, investments in dental research moved a trade to a profession. From the fluoridation of public water supplies – a crowning public health achievement of the 20th Century – to high-speed handpieces, dental composites and ceramic restorations, periodontal diagnostics and therapeutics, and more biologic approaches to replacing lost tissues, it was the investments in dental research that defined us as a profession.

AADR Members Accept the Advocacy Challenge

In July, AADR issued an Advocacy Challenge calling on AADR members to meet with their members of Congress during the summer recess period. Members of Congress need to hear from their constituents about the value and importance of dental, oral and craniofacial research because they will be making critical funding decisions this fall.

AADR Members Publish Study That Demonstrates the Promise of Exploiting Resident FCSCs to Regenerate Cartilage and Repair Joint Injury

In a study titled "Exploiting Endogenous Fibrocartilage Stem Cells to Regenerate Cartilage and Repair Joint Injury" AADR member Mildred C. Embree et al demonstrate the promise of exploiting resident fibrocartilage stem cells (FCSCs) as a regenerative therapeutic strategy to substitute cell transplantation that could be beneficial for patients suffering from fibrocartilage injury and disease.

AADR Government Affairs Committee & FNIDCR Transition Team Meet with Congress

Last month, members of the AADR Government Affairs Committee and the Friends of NIDCR transition team conducted 20 meetings with members of Congress. During these meetings they urged Congress to approve a short term continuing resolution through December 9 and then when returning from the election to approve an omnibus appropriations bill that provides $34.1 billion for NIH and $430.5 million for NIDCR.

AADR is accepting applications for the AADR Fellows Program, which is designed to recognize leaders of AADR and individuals who have served AADR in various ways throughout their careers. NIH Medical Research Scholars Program: Now Accepting Applications

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP) application process is now open from October 1, 2016 to January 13, 2017. The MRSP is a yearlong research training program designed to attract creative, research-oriented dental, medical and veterinary students to the NIH intramural campus in Bethesda, Maryland. AADR has renewed its commitment to the program and will co-sponsor the program through a $75,000 donation to the Foundation for the NIH.

FOA: Microphysiological Systems (MPS) for Disease Modeling and Efficacy Testing (UG3/UH3), Letters of Intent are Due by October 29

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) titled “Microphysiological Systems (MPS) for Disease Modeling and Efficacy Testing,” to develop highly reproducible and translatable in vitro models for preclinical efficacy studies through discovery and validation of translatable biomarkers, development of standardized methods for preclinical efficacy testing and definitive efficacy testing of candidate therapeutics using best practices and rigorous study design.

S2S Loan Repayment Program

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Students to Service Loan Repayment Program (S2S LRP) provides up to $120,000 to medical (M.D. and D.O.) or dental (D.D.S. or D.M.D.) students in their final year of school in return for a commitment to provide primary health care full time for at least three years at an approved NHSC site in a Health Professional Shortage Area of greatest need.
