The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have released the April issue of  JDR Clinical & Translational Research, which is a peer-reviewed, quarterly journal that encompasses all areas of clinical and translational research in the dental, oral and craniofacial sciences. JDR Clinical & Translational Research is dedicated to publishing original research at the interface between discovery science and clinical application, with the translation of research into healthcare delivery systems at the individual patient, clinical practice, and community levels.

Funding Opportunity in Regenerative Medicine

Given the tremendous promise of regenerative medicine to enhance human health and treat disease, Congress included a provision in the 21st Century Cures Act to support a Regenerative Medicine Innovation Project ($30 million distributed over FY17 through FY20) for the funding of clinical research to further the field of regenerative medicine (RM) using adult stem cells, including autologous cells.

Call for Applications: 2017 International Summit in Human Genetics and Genomics

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is accepting applications for the International Summit in Human Genetics and Genomics. The summit will take place August 30-September 30, 2017. The Human Genome Project (HGP), led by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) at NIH, was the world's largest, government sponsored, collaborative, biological project that led to the development of a reference sequence for the human genome. This effort benefitted both research and medicine worldwide, as it provided new insights into the genetic contributions to disease.

Funding Opportunity Available From the NIH Common Fund Health Care Systems Research Collaboratory Program

The Health Care Systems (HCS) Research Collaboratory is working to strengthen the national capacity to implement cost-effective large-scale research studies – called pragmatic clinical trials – that engage health care delivery organizations as research partners. The Collaboratory currently supports a series of pragmatic clinical trial demonstration projects to gather best practices for the design, implementation, and dissemination of pragmatic clinical trials within healthcare systems.

NIH Center for Scientific Review: New Peer Review Video Briefings

The NIH Center for Scientific Review posted recordings of their most recent webinar series on peer review. The first two briefings will provide applicants with key information that could help them better navigate the NIH peer review process. The third briefing will reaffirm NIH’s commitment to basic research and help applicants and reviewers better do their part in proposing and reviewing basic research.

    Strides in Science

    Marcelo W. B. Araujo, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D. is the Vice-president, Science Institute for the American Dental Association (ADA), Chicago, Illinois.  Araujo earned his D.D.S., with a certificate in Periodontal Disease from Universidade Gama Filho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and his M.S in oral sciences, Ph.D in epidemiology and Fellowship in Clinical Research and Teaching in Periodontics from the University at Buffalo-SUNY, NY.

    Since joining AADR in 2000, Araujo has remained an active presenter at IADR and AADR meetings.  He is involved with the Periodontal and Cariology Groups and the Evidence-based Dentistry and Global Oral Health Inequalities Networks.

    March 31, 2017, is the application deadline for the 26th Summer Institute in Clinical Dental Research Methods. The Summer Institute will be held June 26-August 4, 2017, at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. The program is designed for dental faculty and other oral health professionals who wish to acquire skills in research methodology specifically targeted for clinical research.

    In Memoriam

    AADR is saddened to learn of the passing of longtime member Frederick “Rick” Curro A clinical professor in oral medicine at New York University (NYU), Dr. Curro was also director of the NYU PEARL Practice Based Translational Network and an IADR/AADR member since 1979.  A dentist, PhD, and clinical pharmacologist, Dr. Curro had a long and distinguished career in pharmaceutical and biotech industries and in academia.  He was the recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Pharmacology/Therapeutics/Toxicology Research Award in 2014 presented in Cape Town, South Africa.
