A Message From the President

Michael E. Crane, Director/Assistant General Counsel, Capital One

Is Anybody Reading This?

My belief – which is only a little tongue-in-cheek – is that nobody is reading this.  That’s not very surprising; I’m not Abraham Lincoln (i.e., I’m not overly eloquent) and, if you’re a typical ACC member, you’ve got stacks of work on your desk and reams of things you have to read, including the oh-so-fun contracts, briefs, and policies.  So, you have better things to do than read this.  And what would I write about anyway?  As usual, I could write about all the great events we’ve had (like our Family Charity Softball Game and the In-House Counsel Conference) and those that are coming up (like the IP Institute and our Fall Gala), but you’re probably tired of reading about that.  Or I could write about our pro-bono or diversity efforts, what we’re doing on the advocacy front, or the new materials added to the ACC website.  But, if you’re someone who’s reading this letter, you probably already know about those things.

So, what I’d really rather do is to hear from you.  If you’re reading this, you must be a real die-hard ACC member, whether you know it or not.  And, even if you’re not a die-hard ACC member, but instead are someone who just comes out to one event a year, I’d really like to hear from you.  Let us know what we’re doing right – and maybe even more importantly, what we could be doing better.  Or let us know about your ideas for an event, for a venue - or whatever.  Two things I’ve learned in my 7+ years in our Chapter’s leadership are that: (1) all of the leadership, from the President, to our Officers, our Directors, and our Committee Chairs, is committed to always improving; and (2) that there are a lot of good ideas and observations out there with our members, but we don’t always capture them all.

So pick up the phone and give me a call.  Well, strike that, I almost never pick up the phone when I don’t recognize the number...  So please don’t call me, but please do send me an email and let me know what you think - and if you are one of those folks who’d rather talk by phone, just let me know and I’ll give you a call back!
