President's Letter

Alaska Healthcare Executives,

We are well into 2013 and another ACHE Congress behind us. Myself and our Regent Vivian Echavarria, FACHE, along with a few other Alaskans, attended the annual ACHE Congress in Chicago recently, and I think I can speak for all who attended that it was rich in education and networking. Proudly, our AHEN was recognized for a chapter merit award and much credit goes to Victor Rosenbaum, FACHE, and all the board officers of 2012 for their time and energy in growing our fine chapter.

This year will bring new educational opportunities for our chapter and our board has worked hard to make Face-to-Face (F2F) education available for all our members. Traditionally, AHEN has and will continue to partner with the Alaska State Hospital and Nursing Home Association, currently led by one of our own members Annie Holt, to have F2F education in conjunction with the ASHNHA annual conference. This year's ASHNHA conference is in beautiful Nome. Concerns over travel logistics and limited budgets prompted our board to lead an effort to satisfy our members' educational needs while also maintaining a strong partnership with ASHNHA. To do this we're having two, one-day (six hours) education sessions. One will be in Nome on 10 Sept 2013 and the other in Anchorage at ANTHC on 12 Sept. Both sessions will be the same presentation. This way, members who are not attending the ASHNHA conference can attend the same education opportunity on Anchorage. There is no cost to members for the presentation except travel, lodging, etc. for those who must travel. NOTE...those folks attending the ASHNHA conference are still required to pay the ASHNHA registration fees, etc. Any questions please let me know.

We are also scheduling our bi-monthly "lunch-and-learns" and members can expect to see an invitation for the next session for sometime in April. Our February article review on "The Mentoring Cycle: A Six Phase Process for Success" by Shannon Pieper was well attended and the discussion benefited all.

We're also scheduling a webinar for the later part of May from a presentation I attended while at the ACHE Annual Congress. We're partnering with the HI-AK HIMSS Chapter to facilitate the webinar on "Using Technology to Create a Performance Excellence Culture." The presentation is excellent and there is no doubt it will provide valuable information for everyone who attends. More to come!

As always, you're involvement in our chapter is what makes us successful. Being the leader in Alaska for providing education to our healthcare executives is our vision. With the quickly changing landscape resulting from the Affordable Care Act, it's clear being aware and attending education opportunities is important and sharing your experience and best practices will help all our members be successful.

Have a terrific spring and hope to see you all soon.

Bill Sorrells, MBA, FACHE
