Message from Your ACHE Regent
Spring 2019
Well despite snow still being present in some parts of the country, I am welcoming this nice spring weather and thinking about the summertime. It was great to see several members of our Chapter at the last Congress held this past March. Congress is always a good event that is well-orchestrated and features high caliber speakers, as well as great networking opportunities. Networking has become one of the most valuable activities at Congress.
Congratulations to our Canadian Chapter of ACHE for receiving an Award of Merit for the increase in the growth of membership for our Chapter. Membership continues to build our chapter with an ability to accomplish much, due to volunteer work being shared by many and not few people. We cover a stunning large geographic area that includes 10 provinces and 3 territories, covering 10 million square kilometers and 5 different time zones. We share an 8,891 kilometer bi-national land border with the United States. Together we are building a stronger Chapter on promoting and protecting the Mission and Values of ACHE here in Canada.
Succession Planning:
Board and Committee Membership on the ACHE Canadian Chapter
We are still in need of interested members who wish to serve on the Board of Directors. There remains open areas requiring keenly interested members. All applications /inquiries can be sent to me (dswerhone@gmail.com). We have many new members who might be interested to serve on a Committee. Please let Frances Roesch, FACHE, our Chapter President, know this at froesch@gmail.com.
ACHE Regent Elections
ACHE has started the 2019-2020 Council of Regents Elections process. All ACHE Fellows are eligible to run for Regent in one of the open areas, including Canada. For more information, check out the Official Notice for the 2019–2020 Council of Regents Elections.
Nominate a School/University for a Higher Education Network
Higher Education Networks (HENs) refers to our graduate programs cross Canada who offer health services programs. The HENs welcome ACHE (and CCHL) in to do presentations on our professional associations, thus promoting and supporting membership into our chapter. Currently we have two HENs (University of Alberta and McMaster University) here in Canada, and we really want to expand this to more programs. Interested in working on this initiative? Let me know! Our first opportunity to increase our membership is at the student level, and by having more HENs we are able to introduce our professional association and engage early careerists.
Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity
ACHE has had a long history of work in support of equity, diversity and inclusivity (EDI). ACHE has worked hard to embed EDI into the culture of the organization, from the grassroots to the most senior levels. As a Chapter, we embrace diversity-including diverse perspectives and approaches to our common challenges. We are wanting to explore a presence in the areas of indigenous and northern health services. We are looking for communities to enhance access to our education programs, as well as advancing and engaging people located in these far and remote areas of our Chapter. I am receptive to hear from anyone interested in exploring this area of our Chapter.
Strategic Plan
The Board of Directors of our Chapter has worked hard to formulate the strategic plan for our Chapter, and they will be focused on developing further initiatives to help guide our chapter’s engagement, growth and services. I am encouraged with the level of engagement that has occurred as a result of these plans.
Our connection with partners, members and Life Fellows are critically important if we are to address health services challenges locally and globally. We will all accomplish much more when we all work together to address challenges we are facing as a chapter.
Set a Summertime Goal to Get your Fellow Credential!
This is the time to take advantage of making it to the next step in your career. Members who meet the Fellow requirements (see ACHE website), need to submit an application and $200 fee by June 30, and you will receive a $200 Exam waiver fee pending approval of your application.
Fellows required to recertify in 2019 need to go to my.ache.org to access their personalized online application, compile your continuing education credits earned, and complete the recertification process. Eligible candidates must recertify by December 31, 2019.
I want to express my privilege to be of service to the ACHE members across Canada. I continue to meet many terrific healthcare leaders and hear from people in our chapter from all over the country. Thank you for your ongoing support and continuing to connect with me.
