Investigate Your Leadership DNA: The ACHE 2013 Chapter Leaders Conference

The American College of Healthcare Executives has become the preeminent society for dedicated healthcare executives in the U.S. To maintain and grow this position, ACHE is asking its chapters to focus on three specific strategic imperatives:

  1. Membership growth.
  2. Membership engagement.
  3. Sponsorship.

These general imperatives are defined and executed at a local, chapter level.  As president-elect, I will attempt to summarize these objectives and provide a framework for discussing in the context of our local healthcare community.

 

Membership Growth

At present, the high achieving local chapters average 250 members per million residents. In review of these programs, several best practice initiatives have been critical to expanding membership. These have included:

  1. Annual academic "college bowl" competition review events.
  2. Career shadow day.
  3. Speaking events at colleges and universities.
  4. Newsletter distribution and diverse contributions.
  5. Website Job listing and sponsorship.

 

Hawaii has no dedicated MBA program for healthcare, despite academically excellent programs at Shidler's University of Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific University and Chaminade. The MPH program at the University of Hawaii has no significant presence in Healthcare Administration. These are typically the main recruiting ground for new members. However, the Hawaii-chapter should consider an outreach program to the UH Manoa Shidler College of Business and  JABSOM. The characteristics of this program should include:

  1. Healthcare business interest group at the Shidler College of Business.
  2. Begin discussion with the Shidler College of Business for the creation of a Healthcare specific concentration in their MBA program, where Hawaii chapter ACHE leadership can be involved in educational and program development to meet the needs of our community.
  3. Creation of a lectureship series on healthcare organization, reform and integration needs/expectations for the community of Hawaii and round-table discussions at JABSOM under the ACHE Physician-Executive Leadership Forum. We should use sponsorship dollars for this function if necessary and use this program to facilitate face-to-face time and networking with our members.
  4. Same as above for other types of programs, such as the UH Manoa School of Nursing & Dental Hygiene, or for undergraduate students pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Public Adminstration with a concentration in Health Care Administration from UH West Oahu.
  5. Our website could post leadership level jobs for our respective systems.
  6. We need to develop a plan for recruiting membership from the following entities: Hawaii Hospice, Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific, St. Francis Healthcare System, and community healthcare facilities including Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, etc.

Membership Engagement

Retaining membership is a value proposition. In Hawaii we have used networking as the primary engagement tool.  Other chapters in the country have used a variety of additional mechanisms that we should consider:

  1. Speaking opportunities at chapter events on topics that members may have already performed for their respective institutions, but now must re-craft for a broader and more sophisticated C-suite level audience.  Constructive feedback is given and discussion follows on ideas for data collection, partnership and "problem-solution" networking. 
  2. Recognition via newsletter, website, and ACHE local chapter sponsored awards.
  3. Sponsored travel to conferences to bring information/industry knowledge back to the local chapter (See #1 above). These may include ACHE conferences to facilitate face-to-face time credits or other opportunities.
  4. Job posting (local-specific) on the Hawaii-Pacific Chapter of ACHE website.
  5. Press releases in local media to highlight the successful candidates who have gained fellow status with ACHE.
  6. Resume review service by chapter executive leadership committee.
  7. Case study presentations by chapter executive leadership on particular problems they faced, i.e. what worked and what didn’t.

Sponsorship

Sponsorship is the engine that supports membership growth and engagement. The Hawaii Chapter has been successful in acquiring sponsorship dollars. We need to build upon this success. Relevant ideas from the conference included:

  1. Work with local entrepreneur groups (like Skai and Hawaii Angels locally) to vette potential products targeting the healthcare market. This could potentially generate donations to the Chapter and is great experience for chapter members and executive leadership alike.
  2. Advertise expertise to banking/financial institutions and developers who are more often interested in the healthcare retail space. Some chapters use NDAs to cover such discussions. This also generates sponsorship income.
  3. Invite sponsors (non-hospital) to give a 40-minute presentation on who they are, their value to the healthcare community and their strategic vision, especially with regard to healthcare reform. Our goal is to make them a "sponsor for life."
  4. One major theme was including vendors to your events. We (Hawaii Chapter) need to expand our sponsorship horizons to include important high-dollar vendors.  Distributors (like Cardinal Health), IT vendors, and consultants are high-value propositions.

We have an exciting year ahead of us. I look forward to working with our ACHE membership and leadership team to move forward with some of these suggestions in order to expand the relevance of ACHE and healthcare leadership in the Hawaii-Pacific region.
