Message from Your ACHE Maine Regent - Spring 2017

Message from Your ACHE Regent
Spring 2017

Well spring is the time of year that scores of ACHE members head to Chicago for Congress!  It is also the time that we have our annual Regents Leadership Conference and Council of Regents Annual Meeting.   This is a time when as a Regent, you get to be involved and witness the Leadership of ACHE doing their work to lead this very successful organization.  It is truly an honor to be a part of it.

At the Regents Leadership Conference, we saw the induction of ACHE’s 2017-2018 Chairman Charles D. Stokes, FACHE, Executive Vice President/COO Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston.  We also see the Chairman-Elect, new Governors and new Regents elected.    It is a great ceremony and a truly humbling experience to see the hours of dedication these individuals have given to ACHE and the profession.

After lunch we go to our District Meetings.  We are in District 1 which includes New England, along with New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.  Here Regents share their updates with the respective Governors and ACHE staff, as well as share success stories of how they have grown membership, involved their Higher Education Network schools as well as provided educational programming.

Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont are combined into one chapter, as you may know.  We were very pleased to see how many face-to-face education credits we offered in 2016. As a very small organization in comparison to some from Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey, we actually exceeded their credit offerings in most cases.  I very much encourage you to follow NNEAHE and take advantage of our educational offerings.  We work very hard to keep them local, convenient and economical.

Another event on Day one is the ACHE Regent Think Tank.  This is a facilitated discussion of a focus that ACHE selects, where we give specific feedback.  This year the discussion was around ACHE’s next strategic planning cycle and what specific ideas did we have that they should consider into the future.

The highlight of the weekend is the Fellows Convocation Ceremony.  The Board, Governors and Regents gown like the Fellows themselves and march in with them.  We then witness the new Fellows receiving their awards.    It is really a special ceremony.  Those of you who are Fellows remember what an achievement this was after years of preparation, studying and testing to finally reach the achievement of Fellow in ACHE.   Their families are in attendance and it is a special day for sure.

I hope I have related to you some of the highlights of the Pre-Congress events for the Regents.  It is a privilege to serve in this role and these are some of the benefits of doing so!
