Message from Your ACHE Regent

Dear Colleagues:

Thank you so much for your warm welcome to the Regent role! I would like to start by thanking Dolores G. Clement, DrPH, FACHE for her magnificent service as our Regent over the past four years. I have attended the formal orientation program provided by ACHE, and Dolores has done an excellent job of coordinating a seamless transition over the past several months to ensure that nothing falls through the cracks (at least I hope nothing has)!

I was privileged to attend the 2017 ACHE Congress on Healthcare Leadership in Chicago on March 27-30, 2017. It has been awhile since I have attended Congress, and I was very impressed and energized by the commitment of the 4,000 or so attendees. There were many excellent speakers, but also many informal learning and networking opportunities throughout the Congress. I was most impressed with the Opening Remarks made by our new Chairman, Charles “Chuck” D. Stokes, FACHE, who called us to unite around patient safety. Medical errors are the third leading cause of death for Americans, numbering more than 250,000 each year, according to a recent Johns Hopkins Medicine study. This is the equivalent of multiple jumbo jets crashing every day. ACHE has been working to develop a partnership with the National Patient Safety Foundation, which has also aligned with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.  Hopefully, we can unite as an industry and make an impact on this critically important topic.

In more local news, we had a very enjoyable ACHE Luncheon during the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association (VHHA) Spring Conference in Williamsburg on April 5-7. We were very fortunate to have Henry Ruberte, FACHE, one of the ACHE Governors, as a guest speaker. Henry travelled from Puerto Rico to be with us, and everyone enjoyed his talk about the ACHE Strategic Roadmap that is designed to help us overcome the challenges we all face. It was also interesting to hear about some of the history of the healthcare system in Puerto Rico. At this meeting, we also honored three local healthcare leaders with Regent’s Awards:

  • Senior Healthcare Executive: Teresa L. Edwards, FACHE

  • Outstanding Service: Roberta A. Tinch, FACHE

  • Junior Healthcare Executive: Alexa R. Warner, MHA

Finally, I have appointed a Regent’s Advisory Council (RAC) to assist me in serving the Region. Therefore, you may see some of these folks working with your Chapters and Higher Education Network Schools as we roll out various initiatives across the Region. Please join me in thanking the following individuals for agreeing to serve in this capacity:

  • Dolores G. Clement, DrPH, FACHE

  • Teresa L. Edwards, FACHE

  • William D. Jacobsen, FACHE

  • Bassam A. Kawwass, FACHE

  • Michael (Andy) Poole, FACHE

Best wishes to all for a relaxing summer, and please feel free to call on me if there is ever anything we can do to assist you.

Regards,

John P. Harding, FACHE
