Message from Your ACHE Regent

Ah yes, summer in Wisconsin. The turbulence we experience at this time of year in Wisconsin can be assimilated to our healthcare industry. Walmart buying Humana, CVS and Aetna, Amazon, Uber, hospital closures, and pervasive merger and acquisitions are all things that signal a new normal for us as healthcare leaders. As we navigate unchartered waters, there is no better time to focus on your leadership development and ensure you are modeling grit, agility and resolve to your teams than right now. The American College of Healthcare Executives is still the leading way to develop these skills and manage your career.

This year’s Congress on Healthcare Leadership was a great example of how ACHE is leading the way. The Congress on Healthcare Leadership continued to show ACHE’s commitment to its members, the ACHE members’ commitment to the healthcare management profession, a collective dedication to growing future leaders and our profession’s resolve to transform healthcare in the United States. At a time where it may seem easier to run from the challenges and resist change, I continue to see my fellow ACHE members run toward the future of healthcare. Kudos to all of us who are committed to seeing our way to a revolution of healthcare across our great nation!

Last, if your fire is lit but your management development bucket full, consider helping to blossom the careers of early careerists and students. I am troubled by how many students and early careerists we are losing from membership because they haven’t realized the connection and benefit of ACHE to their career growth. What I’ve heard is that the early careerists and students are looking for that connection through mentorships – both formal and informal. If you’d like to help me mentor and advise early careerists and students, please reach out and partner with me on developing the future leaders of our industry! Or, are you a physician and looking to mentor other ACHE physician members. Physicians are the largest group of members joining ACHE. LDP Visits Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin

The 2018-2019 Leadership Development Program (LDP) Cohort IX kicked off their 2018 Site Visits with a day at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin including meetings and tours at the Corporate Center, Children’s Hospital, and Delafield Clinic.

The group started their day at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Corporate Center in Milwaukee, with a light breakfast and an interactive discussion with senior leaders including Scott Turner, COO, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Executive Vice President, Children’s Hospital and Health System; and Thomas Miller, Vice President of Surgical & Diagnostic Services.  Michael Madrzak, Director of Surgical/Interventional Services – Herma Heart Institute, then provided an in-depth overview of the Institute and a video preview of their annual Heart Summit.

The morning continued with presentations from several service lines, and discussions with Sarah Currie, Director of Patient Care Service Line – NICU; Dr. Michael Uhing, Clinical Vice President of Inpatient, Emergency Department & Trauma Center Services and Medical Director of Neonatology; and Cheryl Weber, Lactation Services Manager.

Highlights included a tour of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and engaging dialogue with Eileen Clark, Family Services Manager – Child Life; Megan Struve, Family Services Manager – Social Work; Sarah Currie, Director of Patient Care Service Line – NICU; Dr. Michael Uhing, Clinical Vice President of Inpatient, Emergency Department & Trauma Center Services and Medical Director of Neonatology; Cheryl Weber, Lactation Services Manager; Helen Saha, Director Patient Care Services – Neurosciences; Linda Flannery, Imaging Manager; and Joe Ackerman, Imaging Manager.

During lunch, the group met with Shelisa Dalton, COO – Children’s Specialty Group, and then spent time learning about managed care and community programs from Julie Antholine, Director of Health Plan Operations – Children’s Community Health Plan; Michael Boeder, Director of Foster Care Medical Home – Care 4 Kids; and Wanda Montgomery, Director of Community Partnerships – Community Health & Education.

The group then traveled to CHW Delafield Clinic, and had an engaging conversation with leaders including Holly Colby, Executive Director of Ambulatory Services; Jack Scalcucci, Director of Business and Southeast Regional Services; and Mike Flaherty, Business Manager of Ambulatory Specialty Care, and ACHE WI LDP cohort V alum (2014).  Leaders then facilitated tours of the new clinic, to wrap up the day with cohort IX.

The site visit was hosted by Luke Belter, MBA, Business Manager – Surgical Services, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, who also involved Cedrick Antonio, Treasurer, Future Healthcare Executives at UW-Milwaukee, who he mentors as part of the Leadership Development Program with the ACHE Wisconsin Chapter.


Wisconsin Chapter Recognized with the Award for Sustained Performance

The ACHE-Wisconsin Chapter was recognized at Congress this year with the Award for Sustained Performance. This award to awarded to all chapters that meet at least one of the four performance standards for a continuous three years. The performance standards are Education & Networking, Net Membership Growth, Level of Member Satisfaction and Advancement of Eligible Members.

Run for ACHE Regent

ACHE is beginning the election process for new Regents to serve a three-year term on its Council of Regents, the legislative body that represents ACHE’s more than 48,000 members. The Regent is the ACHE leader within a specified geographic jurisdiction elected by the voting members to represent the interests of members in the governance of ACHE and its chapters.

Recommended knowledge, skills and experience include knowledge of the programs, products and services of ACHE and the local chapter(s); knowledge of the local healthcare community including senior-level healthcare executives, state and regional healthcare associations; negotiation, influencing and policy decision/analysis skills; and personal organizational and planning skills. Go to the Member Center for full position descriptions for geographic Regents and federal sector Regents. The descriptions include a summary, scope of responsibility, meeting requirements and other commitments.

All Fellows who wish to run for election must submit a letter of intent to by Aug. 24. The letter of intent must include a current business title, business address, email address and telephone number. Enhance Your Decision-Making Skills: 3 Tips

Good decision making requires a sense of prediction—how different choices change the likelihood of different outcomes—and a sense of judgment—how desirable each of those outcomes is—according to a Harvard Business Review article by Walter Frick.  

Highlighted below are three ways to improve your ability to predict the effects of your choices and assess their desirability.

1. Avoid overconfidence. Consider the fact that you may be more confident about each step of your decision-making process than you ought to be, and that’s OK. If you embrace being less certain, however you may be more likely to revisit the logic of your decision and prepare for dramatically different outcomes than your expected one.

2. Analyze how frequently predicted outcomes occur. Numerous studies demonstrate that the best starting point for predictions is to ask “How often does that typically happen?” Get away from the specifics of your particular decision or individual case, and look at the base rate and outcomes of similar cases first.

3. Learn about probability. Research suggests basic training in probability makes people more effective forecasters and helps them avoid certain cognitive biases. Brushing up on probability theory may help you better express uncertainty and think numerically about the question “How often does this usually happen?”

“Great decision makers don’t follow these rules only when facing a particularly difficult choice; they return to them all the time,” Frick writes. “They recognize that even seemingly easy decisions can be hard—and that they probably know less than they think.”
