President's Message

Dear Colleagues,

The second quarter is coming to an end and I am delighted to share with you some of our accomplishments. Our ACHE chapter has been hard at work to fulfill our goal to help members network, learn, and advance.

This year our chapter was awarded an ACHE Chapter Innovation Grant to be used for development of early careerists. We are utilizing the grant for a three part series titled “Next Generation of Leadership”. In May we hosted our first event in the series at Studio AM featuring special guest Baron Batch, local artist and former Pittsburgh Steeler. The session was limited to 20 members and provided opportunities for networking and individual discussions with the guest speaker.  Baron spoke to the early careerists about the importance of infusing creativity into their leadership styles.

In June we held two events for chapter members. The first event was on June 8th at the Erie Club and the topic was “Listening to Employers: How Health Systems Can Support Population Health Management”. This session focused on employer offerings such as health promotion, health behavior change, and other allied services with the intent to improve population health.  The moderator was Mark Kresse, PT, FACHE (Healthcare Manager, GE Transportation). Panelists included; David Gibbons, MBA, RN – (President, UPMC Hamot), Erin Siegrist, CBP, CCP, CPCU, SPHR, SHRM-SCP – (Director of Benefits, Erie Insurance), and Jeff Carlson, MBA – (COO, St. Vincent Hospital, Allegheny Health Network).

Our second June event was held on June 22nd at UPMC Mercy and the topic was “Improving Health Status of Your Community”.  This session featured an interactive discussion about the impact of Operation Safety Net on Pittsburgh’s homeless population.  The panel included Operation Safety Net’s Medical Director and 2015 CNN Hero Award nominee, Dr. Jim Withers, MD. In addition to Dr. Withers, the panel included Michael Grace, MBA, FACHE (CEO of UPMC Mercy Hospital) and Sherri Mackall, MSN, RN (Director of Care Management, UPMC Mercy).

Positive momentum continues as we have many education and networking events planned throughout the remainder of the year.  Please consider joining us at an upcoming event in the Pittsburgh area or Northern region.  Our summer networking opportunity will be on July 14th at North Country Brewing in Slippery Rock, PA. Mark your calendars for a few notable events that you will not want to miss this Fall-- The Western Pennsylvania Healthcare Summit on October 13th and the ACHE of Western PA Annual Meeting on December 7th.  More information will be forthcoming about registration for both of these events as well as other education and networking events planned for the second half of 2017.

As always, we hope that the Western PA chapter of ACHE is a go-to resource for you to Network, Learn and Advance your careers.   We appreciate your membership here at ACHE of Western PA and are eager to meet you at an event.  We welcome your participation and any feedback that you may have.  I look forward to connecting with each and every one of you as

Best,

Laura
