Commission on Cancer Participates in One Voice Against Cancer Lobby Day

One Voice Against Cancer (OVAC), a collaboration of national non-profit organizations representing millions of Americans, delivers a unified message to Congress and the White House on the need for increased cancer-related appropriations.  As a member, the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) sent a small contingent of eight CoC members and volunteers to the 2012 Lobby Day, July 9-10,  to address their 2013 priorities turning the fight against cancer into a national priority.

OVAC recognizes the importance of federal funding for cancer research, early detection, prevention, drug development, nurse education, and childhood cancer awareness programs.  The CoC contingent visited the senators and representatives from their respective states to call on Congress to:
  • Increase funding for cancer research at the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute, along with cancer prevention and early detection programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Fully support drug development at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, along with the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration Patient Navigation Program, and Title VIII Nursing Programs. These programs help cancer patients get well faster by bringing new cancer drugs to market and training tomorrow’s cancer care workforce.
  • Become an active member of the House Cancer Caucus or Senate Cancer Coalition.

The Illinois contingent included Connie Bura, Administrative Director of the CoC, along with representatives from Susan G. Komen for the Cure and LIVESTRONG.  To view more information about OVAC, visit their website at
