U.S. News Publishes List of Best Hospitals

The 2013 U.S. News and World Report “Best Hospitals” issue was recently published.  The Commission on Cancer (CoC) proudly reports that 43 of the 50 best cancer hospitals listed in the report are CoC-accredited with two additional programs currently pursuing CoC accreditation.  To be considered for ranking, a hospital had to meet any of the following four criteria:

  • Be a teaching hospital
  • Be affiliated with a medical school
  • Have at least 200 beds
  • Or have at least 100 beds plus four or more key medical technologies such as PET/CT scanner and certain precise radiation therapies

This year, 2,227 hospitals met one or more of these criteria.  Each hospital received a U.S. News score from 0 to 100 based on four elements:  reputation, patient survival, patient safety, and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services.  The 50 top performers in each specialty were then ranked based on their scores.  The four elements and their weightings, along with the list of the 50 best cancer hospitals are included in the publication. This information is available from the U.S. News and World Report website at  To order the 2013 edition, visit  Also look for the CoC ad in the 2013 edition promoting the benefits of CoC accreditation.
