General Building Contractors Association
GBCA CLC Hosts Fashion District Philadelphia Tour
GBCA’s CLC brings young construction leaders to construction projects that are making an impact in Philadelphia.
On May 23, General Building Contractors Association’s
Construction Leadership Council hosted a Hard Hat Tour of Fashion District
Philadelphia (FDP). The $420 million, 1.1 million square foot shopping center
project is being built by GBCA members Skanska USA Building and Shoemaker
Construction Co. in a joint venture.
FDP is scheduled to open in September 2019. Already secured
tenants include Century 21, Forever 21, Zales Corp., Nike, Columbia, H&M,
and City Winery. The mall will also feature an eight-screen AMC Theater and a Round1
The tour highlighted several logistical challenges for the
contractors. FDP is half underground, and completely surrounded by mass transit
lines (subways, trolleys, and rail), and abuts a historic building to one side.
Being in Center City also means navigating narrow streets and tight spaces.
The FDP project renovates the Gallery at Market East, located
in the heart of Philadelphia’s Center City, and opened in 1977 as part of an
effort to redesign public spaces in the city. Now, just over 40 years later,
FDP aims to reshape and revitalize the neighborhood.
In September, the CLC will host a Hard Hat Tour of the new $1.5
billion, 1.5 million square foot Penn Medicine Pavilion project as part of
AGC’s Leadership Development Conference. CLC members from across the country
will be able to view one of the nation’s largest Integrated Project Delivery (IPD)
healthcare projects. The project recently celebrated its topping off ceremony.
CLC is excited to host the 2019 Leadership Development Conference in
Philadelphia, and we hope to see many young AGC leaders this fall!
