AGC-BACKED LOCATE ACCURATELY PROGRAM GETS $25,000 EARMARK
Funding for an AGC-led effort was announced at last week’s Common Ground Alliance (CGA) Annual Meeting in Dallas.

AGC leads a team developing a program for the CGA www.commongroundalliance.com focusing on the responsibilities of contract locators and facility owner/operators relating to worker safety and underground facility damage prevention.  AGC was successful in encouraging the CGA, in concert with the US DOT’s Office of Pipeline Safety, to earmark up to $25,000 for development of this program as well as securing the endorsement of the National Utility Locating Contractors Association www.nulca.org.  The first project, a brochure designed for locating personnel has been drafted and is undergoing final edits.  It will be available nationwide to one-call centers and other interested stakeholders in the one-call process in the first quarter of 2005.  Some key points of this new awareness program are noted in the acronym MARKS.  They include:

Membership in Your Local One-Call Center

Accurately Locate and Mark Underground Facilities Prior to Excavation

Respond to Locate Requests in the Time Prescribed by Law

Keep Accurate Records of Underground Facility Locations

Safety is a Shared Responsibility

Whether you are a facility owner/operator, locator, design professional, One-Call Center employee, excavator/contractor or other stakeholder, ensuring the safety of those who work and live in the vicinity of existing underground facilities is a shared responsibility.
