AGC OPPOSES RECOMMENDATION TO INCREASE FEDERAL OVERSIGHT OF DAMAGE PREVENTION LAWS

AGC MEMBERS VOLUNTEER TO RESPOND TO NEEDS
In the past few days, there have been numerous calls into the AGC national office concerning AGC’s response to the devastation in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.  This is an attempt to provide some information on those queries and comments.

Contractor Response:  We have consulted with the chapters in the region and have been informed that contractors are mobilizing to respond to the damage.  They are still in search and rescue/recovery mode.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is coordinating an organized response with the Mississippi Valley Flood Control Branch for clean-up.  We have been told that the Flood Control Branch is working with other AGC chapters in the region to identify contractors who are available to participate.

Indemnity for First Responders: Prior to the hurricane, AGC had been shopping a federal “Good Samaritan” law to protect volunteer contractors who respond to natural disasters and terrorist attacks.  We will be seeking to add this language to the disaster relief bill that Congress will pass upon their return.  We are also consulting with the affected chapters to identify additional relief type provisions that would be appropriate to add to the legislation.

Contributions:  One way to help victims of Hurricane Katrina is by donating cash to humanitarian organizations and volunteer agencies.  Cash donations give volunteer agencies the most flexibility to help those in need.  They also allow agencies to avoid the labor-intensive need to pack, transport, sort, and distribute donated goodsPresident Bush identified two national organizations, the American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org) and the Salvation Army (http://www.salvationarmyusa.org), which have both mobilized to care for those in need.  In addition, visit USA Freedom Corps’ website (www.usafreedomcorps.gov) to be linked to a list of volunteer agencies providing services to victims, including clean up, childcare, housing repair, crisis counseling, sheltering and food.

Here are some links which may be of use to AGC Members. AGC of America will keep you apprised of additional developments.
