AGC Wants Your Input on an OSHA Proposed Rule for Confined Space in Construction
Employers must determine if there is confined space on the job site, according to the proposed rule and if such a confined space exists, the employer would determine if there are existing or potential hazards. If there are such hazards, the employer then would classify the space according to the physical and atmospheric hazards found in it.

To read the proposed rule, click on   Proposed Confined Space Rule

The four classifications are:

1. Isolated-Hazard Confined Space,

2. Controlled-Atmosphere Confined Space,

3. Permit-Required Confined Space, and

4. Continuous System-Permit-Required Confined Space

The proposed requirements for each type of confined space are tailored to control the different types of hazards. Recurring issues that AGC members have been raising include:

· Recordkeeping requirements

· Affect on small businesses

· Vague definition of confined space

· Definition of a controlling employer and their responsibilities

AGC’s Director of Safety and Health Michelle Myers is soliciting comments no later than January 24th so that AGC can submit to OSHA. If individuals would like to submit their own comments to OSHA, the deadline is January 28th. Please encourage your members to share their experience and expertise.

For further information, contact Michelle directly. She can be reached at 703/837-5410 or myersm@agc.org.
