Four Weeks Until Annual Convention; Still Time to Make Plans & Join Us!

During the past week, 97 new participants have registered to attend Annual Convention, bringing the total attendance to over 300. Registration remains open for the next four weeks, paving the way for record setting attendance.

Members have reserved all rooms in the Chapter's room block at the host resort. As of this morning, there were no more rooms available to the general public at the Hilton. Georgia Branch, AGC is managing a waiting list for the Hilton should rooms become available due to cancellations. We have also secured a few rooms at the Luau Resort just feet away from the entrance of the Hilton's conference center.

Reminder: Online registration offers a price savings. Visit the convention website for more details.

New Information on Pending 3% Withholding

The IRS issued final regulations on May 6 for implementation of the 3% withholding law.

At first blush, it appears the regulations delay the effective date to January 1, 2012, providing an extra year before payments are withheld. But the final regs also sunset the exclusion of payments under existing contracts after one year so all payments will be subject to withholding as of January 1, 2014.

Construction Industry Adds 5,000 Jobs; Unemployment Remains Nearly Twice National Average

By Ken Simonson, Chief Economist, AGC of America
Released May 6, 2011

After Years of Declines, Construction Employment Stable Since Early 2010; Declines in Public Sector Demand Likely to Drag on Employment Levels for Rest of Year, Economist Predicts

The construction industry added 5,000 jobs in April while the industry’s unemployment rate declined slightly to 17.8 percent, nearly twice the national average, according to an analysis of new federal employment data released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said the figures continue a year-long trend of little change in construction employment after years of steep declines and predicted the stagnation is unlikely to change soon.
