Building Georgia Legislative Day - Registration Opens TODAY!

For over a decade, AIA, AGC and ACEC have hosted an evening reception for our memberships and invited representatives of the legislative and industry‐related governmental agency communities.

New this year, we are proud to host a full‐day of activities called Building Georgia Legislative Day! Opening the events is a breakfast program hosted by the associations’ young leaders. Following the breakfast there will a guided tour of the Capitol to see the House and Senate in session. Mid‐day we are hosting a networking reception and luncheon featuring remarks by Governor Nathan Deal.

Legislative Report Features Sales & Use Tax and Geographic Preference Issues

Since our Legislative Report last Wednesday, we’ve been extremely busy at the Capitol. Although the General Assembly was in recess last week, the House & Senate Appropriations Committees held a marathon of Joint Budget hearings in an effort to begin developing the 2012 state budget.

This week’s report highlights a recent Immigration Compliance Seminar that addresses HB 87 from 2011’s legislative session, continuing discussions with the Department of Revenue regarding contractor Sales & Use Tax requirements and debate on a bill that would promote geographic preference on public works projects.

Build Georgia Awards Due in 3 Weeks

The Build Georgia Awards began in 1989 when the Georgia Branch, AGC recognized General Contractor members and their construction teams for outstanding performances on some of Georgia's most remarkable projects. Several years later the program began recognizing Specialty Contractors for their projects.

The 2012 Build Georgia Awards Program opened in early January. Winners will be recognized on June 12 at the Chapter's Awards Breakfast during our Annual Convention in Hilton Head, SC.

All projects completed by December 31, 2011 are eligible to compete in the 2012 Build Georgia Awards program.

Entries are due by 2:00 pm on Thursday, February 9, 2012.

Safety Van visits for members; Train your employees on the jobsite!

In December 2011, the vans visited 95 jobsites and trained 1,309 field personnel. The following firms used the site safety van service a minimum of three times in December. Georgia Branch, AGC commends them for making safety and safety training an important part of their culture.

REMINDER: Beginning January 1, 2012, firms scheduling the AGC SIte Safety Van that are NOT participants in AGC's workers' compensation program, CompTrust AGC MCIC, will incur a $50 per visit charge. This safety training charge only applies to companies who schedule the site training and are NOT receiving their workers' compensation coverage through CompTrust AGC.

Ban on Truck Driver Use of Hand Held Mobile Phones

US DOT recently issued a final rule restricting the use of hand-held mobile telephones by interstate commercial motor vehicle drivers (CMV) and interstate hazmat drivers. The rule went into effect January 3, 2012. It does not restrict or prohibit the use of hands free devices. It also does not currently apply to CMV drivers that do not cross state lines; however, states are required to adopt the requirements within three years as a condition for continuing to receive Federal Motor Carrier Safety Assistance grants.
