AGC-GM Rolls Out the NEW Supervisory Training Program this Fall!
Complete New Design!
Over the course of the past 18 months, the AGC of America has been working to completely redesign the nationally recognized Supervisory Training Program (STP).  Their intent was to update the course material and streamline the curriculum content to make it more valuable and useful to you as a contractor.  It is now complete compressing the program from ten units down to six units, thus providing better, more relevant content in a reduced time frame.

The AGC of Greater Milwaukee, which has the most successful STP program in the country, will be rolling out the NEW STP this September 2015.
The New STP will feature:
An E-Book for every one of the six units
Every STP course will be activity based, with discussions, case histories, problems to solve and exercises
Participants will draw upon field experience and learn by interaction with others from all areas of the construction industry
Instructors will come from the industry, providing first-hand knowledge and experience
Upon completion of the six STP Units a Formal Certificate of Completion will be issued by the AGC of America

We will begin with the NEW STP Unit 1 this Fall Semester of AGC's Educational Program.  Keep an eye out for the Fall itinerary coming soon!

CLC Supports Sojourner Family Peace Center with VolunTour Event
Be sure to check out the Event Photo Album
On Saturday, June 6th, a crew of 9 dedicated their time to helping the Sojourner Family Peace Center by taking the children on a field trip adventure to the Milwaukee County Zoo.  But before we did, we checked out the new facilities they will be occupying once it is complete.

Alice Westphal of Mortenson Construction walked the group through the over 70,000 square foot project and explained their concept for a co-located model of services for families impacted by domestic violence in our community.  This means that, in addition to being safe haven for women and their children, there will be representatives from Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Public Schools, Jewish Family Services, the Milwaukee Police Department and the district attorney's office, and others to provide all the services they need in the same building.  The design of this building will be a model for shelters across the country.

You can get an inside look at the project in our Event Photo Album.

After the tour, we doffed our hard hats and went to pick up the children for a wild Zoo Adventure!  They got to see the gorillas and elephants, venture into the Aviary and Reptile House, talk back to the peacocks, and feed the goats.  After washing our hands thoroughly, we headed over to the picnic area for a delicious lunch before taking the tuckered-out tykes back to their temporary home.  Before getting off the bus, each kid got a gift bag, specially customized for them.

Thank you so much to those who contributed to this cause!  Thanks to Mortenson Construction and CG Schmidt for donating zoo passes, and to CornerStone Plumbing for donations for the gift bags!  The kids really appreciated your generosity, and so do we!

Amsterdam's New 3D-Printed Steel Bridge is Revolutionizing the Building Industry
Heijmans, the innovative Dutch construction company behind the smart highway and glowing Van Gogh-inspired bicycle paths, has unveiled their latest avant-garde project: a 3D-printed steel bridge in the heart of Amsterdam. Created in collaboration with Dutch startup MX3D and designed by Dutch designer Joris Laarman, the 3D-printed pedestrian bridge is part of Heijmans’ aspirations of building the “spatial contours of tomorrow.” Multi-axis industrial robots will construct the pedestrian bridge using cost-effective and scalable technologies.

The goal behind the experimental 3D-printing project is the eventual creation of an automatic construction site. According to Jan van de Ven, Heijmans’ Manager of Business Development, an automatic construction site would not only be dependable and fully managed, but would also be environmentally friendly because of its energy-efficiency processes and minimization of construction waste. The use of 3D printing for construction purposes also has benefits in the design sector and, once popularized, can revolutionize the way we approach the design/build process.

“Construction and design are currently rather separate factors in construction – the architect designs something and the constructor interprets the design and builds what he thinks is needed,” says Jurre van der Ven, Heijmans’ Innovation Manager. “But using 3D printing for a bridge makes design and construction operate hand-in-hand. For instance, both activities are done at the same time, instead of first building the structure and then adding the design later. This means we will also have to start looking at design in a completely different manner.”

The location of the bridge has not yet been determined but will be announced soon. The pedestrian bridge will span one of Amsterdam’s old canals and has been described by designer Joris Laarman as a “fantastic metaphor for connecting the technology of the future with the city’s historic past, in a way which would reveal the best aspects of both worlds.” A visitor center will open in September 2015 and serve as an educational public space that will track the progress of the project.
