the third year in a row the CLC featured a Bags Tournament, raising
money for the CLC
Scholarship Fund through the AGC Education & Research Foundation.
Sixteen teams went head-to-head in a Sweet Sixteen style, single
elimination contest. One by one, teams were eliminated and the victors
moved on the the next round. After many hyper-competitive matches, VJS Construction Services team
came out victorious for the third year in a row!

|The 2019 Worker Compensation Rates Are Here!|
The Wisconsin Compensation Rating Bureau (WCRB) recently released the
new annually adjusted Workers Compensation Rates, which go into effect October 1,
2019. These numbers continue a recent trend of declining rates.
|Contractor classification drops over 11%, thanks in large part to the construction industry placing a premium on safety!|
The WCRB promulgates the annual Workers Compensation Rates, which are then
approved by the State of Wisconsin, Office of the Commissioner of Insurance.
This year the trend of rate decreases continued, with the aggregate contracting
classification dropping by 11.21%, and construction classifications by 9.43%. Click here to review the highlights of the new rates.

Over the past 25 years, a focus on improved safety practices and attention to training and prevention have reduced the rate of construction workplace fatalities by one third from 15/100,000 in 2014 to 9.5/100,000 in 2017. These statistics show that a cultural shift in attitude toward safety guided by leadership support and investment can turn the tide on preventable deaths. It is this same mindset that is necessary to move the needle on an even greater danger to construction workers – suicide. According to a CDC Report released in 2018, more construction workers die by suicide each year than any other industry – at a rate of 53.2/100,000. This rate is not only over 5x greater than the workplace fatality rate, but 4x greater than the suicide rate of the general population.
As an industry who has a large part of its workforce made up of white, middle age males without a college education (the demographic population most at risk of suicide) and combined with a large number of veterans (whose suicide rate is 1.5 times greater than the non-veteran population) we are at increased risk for suicide before you even begin to consider the industry specific factors. When you add in the elements of a “tough guy” mentality where talking about feelings or struggles may be looked down upon; a transient workforce where peer relationships may not be encouraged; erratic work hours and location – requiring travel and time away from families and physical pain resulting from work related injuries or wear and tear (and resulting drug use/self medicating) it might not be as surprising as first thought why construction is so at risk for suicide.
You may be reading this and thinking “not me – we don’t have a suicide problem at our company.” I would challenge you to consider do you have a problem with deaths caused by falls, struck by incidents, or electrocutions? I would hope not. And yet, you more than likely invest in fall protection, back up alarms, spotter training, and assured grounding programs and training – to prevent fatalities by these causes. So, if you are among the fortunate who have not experienced an employee suicide, I urge you to begin investing in suicide prevention in your company. |Construction Employment Increases in 42 states from June 2018 to June 2019|
Forty-two states added construction jobs between June 2018 and June 2019, while construction employment increased in 30 states from May to June, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of Labor Department data released July 19, 2019. Association officials said the new construction employment data demonstrates the need for new federal investments in career and technical education programs, along with immigration reform.

The AGC of Greater Milwaukee is pleased to announce our Fall leadership development and safety training calendar!
Safe and well-run jobsites are essential to employee wellbeing and productive and profitable projects. And the AGC makes it easy for contractors to have their employees attain these valuable skills through a wide range of course offerings.
As a sneak peak, the AGC will be providing management education programs for Supervisory Training Programs (STP), Construction Supervision Fundamentals, and new offerings such as Learning from the Legends (an AGC Leadership Forum). We will also be offering traditional, but essential Safety Training Course, including Basic First Aid/CPR/AED, Silica Standards and OSHA-30.

Foxconn Technology Group said Wednesday it has awarded subcontracts totaling more than $15 million for further work on its factory complex under construction in Mount Pleasant.
The latest contracts deal with the power substation to be built at the site, just across Racine County Highway H from the larger substation American Transmission Co. is building.
The latest awards are to:
Gestra Engineering Inc., Milwaukee, for materials testing.
C.D. Smith Construction Inc., Fond du Lac, for concrete work, building enclosures and interiors.
Spancrete Inc., Waukesha, for precast concrete.
Daigle Brothers Inc., Tomahawk, for miscellaneous metals work.
Lee Plumbing Mechanical Contractor Inc., Kenosha, for mechanical and plumbing work
Staff Electric Co. Inc., Menomonee Falls, for electrical work.
Morse Electric Inc., Beloit, for long lead electrical equipment.
Milwaukee office of BrightView Landscape Development Inc., Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, for landscaping work.
Foxconn said that to date it has awarded subcontracts totaling more than $175 million for work at its Mount Pleasant site.
