  Legislative and Regulatory Sessions at AGC's 89th Annual Convention

AGC’s 89th Annual Convention in Las Vegas, March 10-14, will feature numerous legislative- and regulatory-focused sessions and meetings.  Today’s Construction Legislative Week in Review includes highlights of those sessions, which cover a range of topics, including Highway and Transportation, Economics, AGC PAC and Tax and Fiscal Affairs.

The AGC Convention runs concurrently with CONEXPO-CON/AGG, one of the largest construction trade shows in the country, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. [ return to top ]

  Simonson to Deliver Economic Forecast for Key Segments, Regions and Materials
Nonresidential construction was one of the hottest sectors in 2007, despite housing, credit and materials woes. Can contractors keep up the rate in ‘08, or do they face a grimmer fate? AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson and Jim Haughey, Chief Economist of Reed Construction Data, will provide the lowdown on key segments, regions and materials.

  Make Your Voice Heard and Have an Impact on This Election Cycle

This meeting is open to all AGC Members and all AGC PAC Donors.  The agenda will address Congressional open seats and the disbursement of PAC support to AGC allies and construction-friendly candidates.  Currently, there are more than 32 open seats in the U.S. House and six in the U.S. Senate.  Each of these represents an opportunity for AGC, through AGC PAC support, to help elect the most construction-friendly candidate possible.

  Recommendations from the Commission on Transportation Policy and Revenue
Jack Schenendorf, vice chair of the congressionally-chartered Commission on Transportation Policy and Revenue, will address Highway and Transportation Contractors regarding the Commission’s recommendations for reauthorization of the Federal SAFETEA-LU transportation legislation. Contractors also will discuss creating grassroots support for transportation infrastructure investment.

  Meeting the Transportation Needs of a Nation on the Move

Pete Rahn, Director of Missouri Department of Transportation and AASHTO President, will present Meeting the Transportation Needs of a Nation on the Move. Over the last year, AASHTO developed a plan for the future of investment in the national transportation system and issued a series of reports documenting needs, future trends and investment recommendations. Rahn will describe these recommendations to attendees.

  Effective Business Strategies for Uncertain Political & Economic Times

  Latest Economic Trends in Federal Contracting
The Federal and Heavy Division helps its contractor members better perform the vast majority of all federal construction projects across the nation. At this session, the Division will cover the latest economic trends in federal contracting in a special presentation by AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson. The Division will also review the latest changes in federal procurement policy and AGC’s plans to move forward on ethics compliance rules for contractors engaged in projects with the federal government.  Tom Kelleher of Smith, Currie & Hancock and AGC General Counsel Mike Kennedy will lead this discussion.
