AGC Named Among “Nation’s Top Nine Remarkable Associations”
A Message from AGC CEO Stephen E. Sandherr

AGC was recently chosen as one of only nine “remarkable” associations that other associations would be wise to emulate by The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) in a new book titled “7 Measures of Success: What Remarkable Associations Do That Others Don’t.”

Among the “measures of success,” the book highlights AGC for our customer service culture. When it comes to customer service, they note, “Remarkable associations build their structures, processes, and interactions…around assessing and fulfilling members’ needs and expectations.” They found that when we restructured our dues process, we changed the way we served our members but in doing so we recognized their expressed concerns.

We were also singled out for our model of collaboration, “At AGC, management doesn’t just talk about the importance of working as a team. They also model this behavior through a unique ‘shared responsibility’ between the CEO and COO.”

This is an honor of which I am deeply proud. We are—and will remain—remarkable, because we have remarkable people doing remarkable things. We have been able to achieve these remarkable things because of the tremendous support from our strong nationwide network of chapters and our committed members. We are also exceptionally proud to be recognized for our good work by our peers in the association profession.

A prime example of this recognition came through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s request that AGC be the sole construction representative in its “Sector Strategies” Partnership. Through the partnership, the two groups are jointly focused on improving environmental regulations, expanding the use of environmental management systems and exploring ways to assess environmental progress.

AGC continues to be the voice of construction economics through AGC’s Chief Economist Ken Simonson’s Construction Inflation Alerts, Data DIGest and specialized regional economic reports. In June, AGC unveiled its first podcast, a popular new five-minute audio report from Simonson on the cost of many construction materials. This new feature has been downloaded by thousands of AGC members since it was launched. Log onto http://www.agc.org/podcast today to listen to a recording on your computer or download it to an iPod or MP3 player.

When AGC speaks, our voice is heard; we are the most influential association tackling the issues that affect the construction industry. AGC closely monitored cement shortages this year and played a key role in obtaining U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez’ response to AGC’s concerns. Through our relationships, we worked out an agreement that now sharply reduces the duty and will eliminate it in three years.

AGC is strong because we are the only construction trade association that represents all facets of the industry, from building to highway and municipal and utilities to federal and heavy construction. Our members are both union and nonunion, and take pride in leading the industry in safety excellence.

Every day, AGC continues to be a remarkable association—Building America’s Quality of Life one member, one chapter and one issue at a time.

Sincerely,

Stephen E. Sandherr [ return to top ]
