AHRI Attends the International Conference on Compressors and Refrigeration

AHRI Vice President of Asia Operations Bridge Xue and Vice President of Research Xudong Wang gave presentations at the 9th International Conference on Compressors and Refrigeration (ICCR), held July 11-12 in Xi'an, China. The conference was sponsored by Xi'an Jiaotong University, the Chinese Association of Refrigeration (CAR), and the China Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (CRAA), and supported by AHRI. More than 300 people participated in the two-day meeting, including AHRI members from Asia. Xue presented an update on positive displacement and centrifugal refrigerant compressors, while Wang provided an update on the results of an R290 refrigerant testing project. Contact: Bridge Xue.

AHRI to Host Connect Demo August 28

AHRI will host a webinar August 28 for AHRI members on the basics of using AHRI Connect.The webinar will explain to participants how to join communities and set up a profile with preferences, and will also demonstrate community features. AHRI Joins globalFACT for Mid-Year HVACR Regulatory Update
Helen Walter-Terrinoni, AHRI’s vice president of regulatory affairs, will join globalFACT August 14 at 10:00a.m. EDT for a mid-year HVACR regulatory update. Participants are invited to learn the latest on hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) regulation, phase down schedules, the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Program, activities of the California Air Resources Board (CARB), and more. AHRI Safe Refrigerant Transition Task Force and Working Groups Set Goals, Identify Gaps

AHRI’s Safe Refrigerant Transition Task Force (STTF) is comprised of an overarching task force and seven working groups. The following working groups have reported the following progress:

  • Codes and Standards - reviewed existing standards and codes
  • Safety Training - created an informal drafting team to do a gap analysis on training materials
  • Communications - will participate in an in-person work session next week to review existing safe refrigerant transition communications materials and identify needs going forward
  • Department of Transportation/Shipping/Packaging and Handling/Warehouse - has engaged in a review of existing regulations and materials relating to shipping

The three additional working groups - Installation/Operation/Maintenance, Reclaim/Recovery/Discussion, and Bulk Storage/Manufacturing Facilities - are expected to meet soon. Members and other interested parties are encouraged to contact AHRI about participating. Technical experts are especially welcome. Contact: Chris Bresee.

CARB Hosts Public Workshop - Carbon Neutrality: Scenarios for Deep Decarbonization

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) will host a public workshop to hear from experts and the public on scenarios for achieving deep decarbonization of California’s economy and to discuss implications for meeting California’s carbon neutrality goals. The workshop will consist of a moderated panel discussion that brings together experts who have constructed economy-wide, deep decarbonization scenarios.  The session will address key aspects of these scenarios that lead to economic transformations needed to achieve carbon neutrality goals.

The workshop is scheduled August 15, from 1-4 p.m., and will take place at the Byron Sher Auditorium of the California Environmental Protection Agency, in Sacramento. Contact: Caroline Davidson-Hood.

Standards and Certification
AHRI Establishes Global VRF Standard Manufacturer Working Group

AHRI hosted representatives of every major Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) manufacturer at the third Global VRF Standard meeting in Brugge, Belgium, July 29-30. AHRI is leading the effort to produce a globally harmonized and accepted standard for VRF equipment that will simplify comparisons of globally manufactured VRF equipment and provide data that can be used for energy calculations and building analysis. 

A working group was established to advance the standard, and the four subcommittees listed below are expected to meet through AHRI Connect to address tasks in their respective areas:

  • Data and Efficiency Descriptors
  • Laboratory Requirements
  • Purpose, Scope, Definition, and Classification
  • Regulatory Compliance

The next meeting is tentatively set for Japan, in early December. Contact: Henry Hwong.

Global
USTR Grants China Tariff Exclusions No Exclusions for AHRI Member Products

The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on August 7 published a Federal Register notice announcing additional Section 301 tariff exclusion approvals for Chinese imported products. The 15 approved product exclusions came from products on List 3, which were subject to tariffs effective September 24, 2018, and cover $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. No AHRI products were among those granted a tariff exclusion.

AHRI recommends that members review the notice for a comprehensive assessment specific to individual member companies. For a full list of AHRI products and components affected by Section 301 tariffs, consult AHRI's Tariff Tracker. Contact: Michael LaGiglia.
