AHRTI Publishes Report 9016-1 on Chemical Stability of Low-GWP Refrigerants with Lubricants

The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology Institute (AHRTI) has completed a project assessing the chemical and thermal stability of low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants with lubricants and HVAC system materials. The project helps the industry identify potential chemical compatibility concerns that may result from interactions between new refrigerants, new refrigerant blends, and current HVACR system materials, including lubricants, system metals, and filter drier media.

Sealed glass tube testing was performed on low, medium, and high-pressure refrigerants in the presence or absence of compressor lubricants. The lubricants were exposed to system materials such as metal alloys and filter drier media. The results indicated good chemical stability overall, with only a few instances of increased reactivity between the refrigerants, lubricants, and materials.

This work is jointly supported by the Department of Energy and U.S. industry. The final report is available on AHRI’s website. Contact: Erika Chow.
