Now entering the third year of its Veterans Outreach
Initiative, the AICP hosted its second Jobs Seminar in Los Angeles (and fourth
overall!) on March 20th at Caviar Content in Hollywood. Since
the Veterans Outreach Initiative began in November 2012, 22 veterans have been
placed with 20 AICP member companies.
CARE Committee Chair, Jessie Nagel (Hype!), who
participated in the Seminar said after event, “It was as if you were going to
hire someone for an entry PA or office position, and the candidates were all in
the "to interview" or "yes" folders.
And, on top of it, they are all veterans. In other words, this is
not a case of having to sacrifice quality for the sake of good.” Five
veterans have been placed with 4 member companies since last month’s Seminar.
Fifteen candidates came well prepared -- many are in film
school and/or have specific film & television experience, not to mention an
eagerness to learn and do more. Partnering with the AICP was the Veterans
in Film & Television, an educational and networking nonprofit for current
and former members of the military working in the entertainment industry,
hosting various programs, events, and a growing 1,500+ membership.
Jasper Thomlinson, Managing Director at Caviar kicked
the evening off with an engaging overview and discussion of the commercial
production industry, and what the candidates can expect when placed with a
production company. Casey Jones, President & CEO of Her3sy,
who himself is a Marine Veteran, gave motivational remarks on how the skill
sets they acquired while serving our Country are in many ways a perfect fit for
the fast-paced production environment.
The second part of the Seminar featured a “speed
interviewing” workshop where 15 veterans interviewed with 8 member companies;
always a great exercise in precision questioning, coupled with a brief
opportunity to make a good impression.
With this in mind, the AICP encourages your company’s
participation in future VOI events. If your company is interested in
offering a fellowship now, you don’t have to wait for the next Seminar!
On request, we will share with you resumes of veterans interested in placement,
and you can decide who to interview, and where to place them. If nothing
else, you'll have exposed them to your company and you'll be exposed to someone
interested in our industry. If you would like to review resumes or get
more involved in AICP’s Veterans Outreach Initiative, please contact David
Phelps at email@example.com.
Thank you again to Caviar for hosting. Be sure to
check future issues of Spotted for more information on the next Veterans Job
