The 2017 AICP Show Curatorial Committee at MoMA
In April, the Curatorial Committees for the AICP Show and AICP Next Awards met in New York City. The Curatorial Committees are comprised of a diverse array of industry leaders, working in all disciplines that contribute to creating marketing in the motion image. The Committees are part of a bifurcated judging system, which begins with a series of judging panels from across the country, with experts in various fields judging work across all categories in the Show and Next Awards. Each Curatorial Committee is the final arbiter in the disposition of their respective show, confirming eligibility and appropriateness to category. Winners of the AICP Show and AICP Next Awards become a part of the archives of the Department of Film at The Museum of Modern Art.
On Wednesday, April 19th, The Next Awards Curatorial Committee met convened at R/GA's New York Offices. The Committee was led by 2017 AICP Next Awards Judging Chair Nick Law, Vice Chairman/Global Creative Director of R/GA. Participating Jury Presidents included: Jill Applebaum, Facebook; Winston Binch, Deutsch; Susan Credle, FCB Worldwide; Kerstin Emhoff, PRETTYBIRD; Jonathan Mildenhall, Airbnb; Chris Milk, Within & Here Be Dragons; Jaime Robinson, Joan; Vivian Rosenthal, Snaps; Jimmy Smith, Amusement Park Entertainment; and Tereasa Surratt from Ogilvy. Also participating as Curators at Large were Jessica Greenwood of R/GA, Jeff Kling of Fallon, Tor Myhren of Apple, and Rob Reilly of McCann Worldgroup.
On Friday April 21st, and Saturday April 22nd, The AICP Show Curators convened in the Founders Room at MoMA. Led by 2017 AICP Show Chairperson Lisa Mehling, Owner/Executive Producer of Chelsea Pictures, the Committee represented a cross-section of experts and specialists from the highest ranks of agencies, production companies, editorial/post houses, music companies, and more. The unique mix of backgrounds and specialties led to lively discussions as the top work in each of the 23 AICP Show categories was discussed. 1:00pm – AICP Base Camp Lunch & Learn: "Reinventing Yourself: Staying Relevant in an Evolving Landscape" with Wiredrive + MediaSilo (Base Camp Theater)
It’s no secret that commercial production is facing a growing array of new competitive challenges from all over the advertising ecosystem as a result of a rapid change in advertising formats. Back in the “good old days”, commercials were shot by production companies, worked on for many weeks with proper budgets and aired on television. Today, branded content can be shot on an iPhone by a “trending” 18-year-old and fed immediately for next to nothing to her millions of fans on YouTube. Now more than ever, the ability to reinvent yourself is a requirement, not a luxury. The new rules have not yet been written, but many companies are actively reinventing themselves and setting the new foundation. In the spirit of this reinvention, we asked 3 creative risk-takers to come and share their experiences with us followed by a Q&A for those attending.
Moderator - Bill Sewell, Co-Founder/Partner, WireDrive + MediaSilo
