Federal Railroad Administrator (FRA) Joseph Szabo and FRA Deputy Administrator Karen Rae are among the numerous speakers scheduled to participate in three regional seminars on high-speed rail in February hosted by APTA and the International Union of Railways (UIC). The two associations developed the regional seminars, titled “International Practicum on Implementing High-Speed Rail in the United States,” to provide U.S. decision makers with the information necessary to implement high-speed rail.

Szabo and Rae will present keynote addresses at the high-speed rail programs. Other speakers will represent rail agencies from countries including Japan, France, Spain, Germany, and Italy, as well as Jolene Molitoris, director of Ohio DOT and former FRA administrator, and Frank Busalacchi, secretary of Wisconsin DOT and chair of the States for Passenger Rail Coalition.

The seminars will be held Feb. 8-9 in Washington, Feb. 9-11 in Chicago, and Feb. 11-13 in Los Angeles. They will offer presentations from representatives of high-speed rail systems around the world, focusing on best practices and lessons learned from European and Asian systems. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials will grant professional development hours to state DOT employees enrolled in any of the three practicums.

This is the first set of seminars developed under a new partnership between APTA and the UIC. The two groups will continue to engage in extensive information sharing that can cover the various technical, finance, and management aspects of planning and building high-speed rail systems.

APTA is the legacy organization of the former High Speed Ground Transportation Association, which in 2007 integrated its members and assets into the APTA structure and now functions through the constituent high-speed and intercity rail committee.
