White House Celebrates Transportation Week |
On Wednesday, May 16, APTA President & CEO Michael Melaniphy joined other APTA members and partners at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building where the White House Office of Public Engagement, DOT, and Office of Science and Technology Policy convened to celebrate National Transportation Week and to highlight the launch of Safety.Data.gov.
“My administration has prioritized strategic, long-term investments in transportation infrastructure that will keep America safe and ensure we can compete and succeed in the global economy,” President Obama said in his proclamation. “I call upon all Americans to recognize the importance of our nation’s transportation infrastructure and to acknowledge the contributions of those who build, operate, and maintain it.”
Todd Park, assistant to the president and U.S. chief technology officer, welcomed the attendees; DOT Secretary Ray LaHood offered the keynote address. Park spoke about the safety data initiative, noting that travelers could download data that then enables them to plan around such situations as accidents and hazards. Information on the initiative appears on LaHood's FastLane blog.
